What takes Arsenal so long to get the deal done?

Its seems to me like  its going to be a typically frustrating summer for Arsenal fans, But whats new?

We should be use to it by now, for the last few years its been pretty much of the same.

Wenger comes out and says “I have money to spend and I will be signing 2/3 World Class, Big. super super class players, and I want to do this fast”… then we wait and nothing? Linked with 200+ players, thanks to sites like caughtoffside who seem to make things up for the hell of it.

And then Wenger feeds us some more info on Arsenal.com like “I will sign a player by the end of the World Cup” or “I will stay up till midnight on transfer deadline day to get the deals done”… and then what? nothing. A few days after the window is shut, he will comes out and says ” we came VERY VERY CLOSE to signing a player” .. BUT,what I wanna know is this?

WHAT TAKES ARSENAL SO BLOODY LONG TO GET A DEAL DONE!!!

To be honest Im just waiting for the “Djourou, Nordviet and Wilshere are like NEW signings” comment from Wenger.

Its seems to be the same transfer soap opera every summer. Remember the Baptista saga & Gorkan Inler, Nasri dragged on all summer, Arshavin the same after all that time we almost missed out.

The chamakh deal took over a year and now this koscielny deal is just dragging on and on and open in the press? Don’t arsenal do things behind close doors anymore?

At the rate we sign players it looks like this is going to be the lot.

What takes us so long? I can’t remember the last time we signed a player out of the blue.

How hard can it really be? Wenger must know the areas he wants and the players he wants by NOW? He has had long enough to identify the weakness. 90% of fans who watch every week could tell you what we need FFS!

Wenger really need to talk less about signings and do more to bring in player, IF he has his phone with him now lets hope he is talking to Joe Cole and a Keeper as well as Gary Cahill. OH that’s right, Wenger is too busy to sign new players as he is working for French TV. and he has forgot his phone hasnt he!!!

In the meantime, Spurs, Man City and co are working hard in bringing in new players.

WAKE UP ARSENE, Less then two weeks till the Barnet game. You do want our “NEW” signings to have time to adjust for the new season don’t you?

Even if we do sign koscielny in the next few days it still not good enough, We need 3/4 MORE players on top of him. But like I said, but the rate we sign players its never going to happen before the start of the season.

I hade hoped that Arsene would have sorted all this out weeks ago, So that the new players could fit in and have a good pre season and come the start of the season we would be ready.

But NO!…. Same old lies, same old Arsene!

I’m really cheesed off now, If they think Im going to be spending money on new kits then they can get lost!…More

    I have another question!

Why are some people so thick and impatient?

  2. Ali says:

i totally agree with you. There isnt many arsenal fans who feel the same way as i do so its nice to see somebody who shares the same views as i do.Most arsenal fans settle for mediocrity and fighting for 3 or 4th place.Every summer we hear the same bullshit how wenger is going to spend and bring in quality but it never happens.Wenger is too fucking busy in south africa working as a pundit when he could be in north london trying to sign joe cole,a new centre back and a holding midfielder.Sick of the bullshit wenger.

  3. athlon says:

I think it is because Arsenal have to think over every single penny of a transfer, no way to increase the deals with 1-2 millions as Real Madrid do. Ironically, the big money deals take less time to annonuce. But I think, despite the miss of the official news, the deals are signed and sealed with both Lorient and the player. I have heard that Arsenal must wait until Lorient sign the replacement of Koscielny. He will join us, it’s just matter of time. If it’s neccessary Gazidis will rush them, so I think Laurent will start the pre-season preprarations with Arsenal. And don’t forget, in this time Arsenal should bring at least one more defender.

  4. George says:

Perfect summary of the crap that we have had to put up with since the penultimate season at Highbury. It’s so obvious to so many of us now that even the “in Arsene we trust” brigade have to admit he’s a liar!

  5. Abhishek says:

the rumors which we hear are just spread by the media. the deals which are actually going to happen are happening or maybe have already happened. the majority of names which have signed for arsenal in the past had signed within 2 weeks of the transfer window. arsene already has the team figured out, maybe players have agreed terms also. its just the media messing with us…..

  6. Wenger out says:

Wenger needs to wait for :
ManU, Chavski, City, spuds villa, etc to do their business
    end of the world cup
till 30 August before making any bids
find out if Barca come up with the cash
the end of his targets’ contacts so we can get them for free
    end of the resession
    the stadium is paid off
    world peace

  7. Dave says:

Wenger is a waste of space. We pay him 4.5m a year and he feels he needs to subsidise this by doing a well paid 4 week stint for French TV while the new season gets closer and our squad remains as weak as it was in May. In fact its weaker Gallas and probably Campbell are gone. The sooner Wenger clears off as well the better for Arsenal Football Club.

  8. George says:

Amongst Wenger’s classic comments was the one about Benzema. After he signed for Madrid Wenger was quoted as saying ” I did not think that Lyon wanted to sell him this season”. Well Mr Wenger, perhaps it was due to the fact that your bid of £850,000 going up to £1m if he scores 100 goals per season was the reason why Lyon “did not want to sell him”!!!!!!!!

  9. Lee says:

Remember the alonso deal?.Arsene could not be bothered to stump up 2 fuckin million to get him. What a stubborn old git wenger is.Fuck of wenger.

  10. Sinbad says:

Wenger ” we came VERy close to signing Ronaldo” we visited him 3 times and saw him play 36 times, we even gave him an Arsenal kit” But in the meantime Man Utd didnt fook about and got the deal done within 48hrs

  11. 7masters says:

Don’t Worry if he doesn’t sign any player and win nothing these time around the tide of hate directed at him would be so great and would likely be fired. He is the problem when it come to signings players , Arsenal need goalkeeper and defensive, midfielder last three years and it his stubbornness we never signed anyone despite obvious weakness.

Arsene Wenger is no longer regarded as genius any more and these time around his job, Legacy is on line. We all agreed to give him one more season to turns things around on may and we would support him until next may when we evaluate what he has done.

I don’t care about trophies but the are good enough sign to show signs of improvement, At least the team should show effort and stop conceding stupid goals. It not to much to ask really and all excuses being lined up after being warned repeatedly to buy striker in January is pointless.

  12. Ali says:

    Wenger classic quotes

August 30th- “I will be up untill midnight trying my best to sign players

    August 31st – NOTHING

September 1st – wenger tells arsenal fans ” We were very very close to signing somone.

  13. Tricky says:

Totally agree with this post, every Summer Wenger strings us along with this “we are close to signing someone” bullshit – and then come August nothing. Anyone who thinks we are actually going to sign anyone else this summer, is going to be sadly mistaken. Get him out now and get a manager in who will actually spend this “war chest” we have had for the past 5 years

  14. joseph says:

All the babies on this site wah! wah! i want a signing and i want it now WAH! WAH! GIVE ME GIVE ME grow up and at least wait till the window closes.

  15. Alex says:

Rememeber that guy Honda? Wenger said he was the player of this World Cup, pure genius, top top class. “Honda gets the ball and magic starts”,- says Wenger. And he knew this guy before, monitored him, wanted to buy this top, top class, amazing player. But SCKA Moscow beat him with a mighty, gob smacking, overblown, record breaking offer of … wait a minute… 5 mln USD.

  16. Mark says:

Great post – Glad people are starting to realise that all Wenger does is lie to the fans every season and it’s about time the arsene we trust brigade look beyond their narrow minds!!

You know will we still be sitting here in September with Almunia in goal and the usual squad. Who would blame Fabregas wanting to leave? He is different class to the players around him and we just don’t compete with the transfers that are going on.

Another lie by Wenger and the board, when we move to the Emirates we will be able to bring the best players in the world to the club. Well that ain’t happened! I’m sorry to say, we need 4 more players… Otherwise another tropheyless season…

  17. Sam says:

It’s been the same ever since David Dein left, the orange one was the spearhead of all arsenal transfers, wenger would identify the targets he wanted and Dein would get down to business, now we have Ivan the bald nosher who looks lost to me when it comes to all matters of football, he should be a bank manager and is way out if his depth, most gooners need to wake up though, konceinly and maybe one other unknown and that will be our lot, even if fab goes, all the barcalona riches will be ploughed back in to the coffers keeping the board happy and wenger on his stubborn pursuit of his football model, all the names being talked about is just ridiculous, outside chance of a keeper but other than that all youth promotion stuff. This will prob be the last summer of this though, 4th place next year, wenger will move upstairs and hopefully we can get someone with some drive and ambition to take us to the top again, cos it’s never gonna happen again under wenger.

  18. Tino says:

Spot on!!!! is like you rad my mine, what a post. Not buying a new kit, to I see some good (new) players on the pitch. this have happen time and time again!
P.S. A real Gooner: shut up!!!!

  19. Alex says:

Biut the problem is – everyone apart from the fans – the board, the shareholders (except maybe Usmanov who probably regards a few mln pounds as pocket change) – everyone is ecstatic about Wengers prudency. If anyone things that Wenger will be fired for the lack of activity on the trasfer market are deluded. This is the main reason he is kept. As long as Wenger guarantees the cash flow and “long term security” he will be adored by the board and the owners. Can he do it without winning any trophies? So far he has been doing just that. Lets see how long this strategy will work.

  20. derek o reilly says:

im not gonna even tink about spending a penny on anymore arsenal kits untill we buy top quality players and win sum silver

  21. Mike says:

The World Cup is not even over and the only club spending silly money is Man City. Wenger will buy a new keeper and a new centre back and I imagine 1 if not both of these will be world class. As I say he cannot do anything with the World Cup still going on if the players that he wants are still playing, my guess is that it is someone from Germany. The irony of all this is that you and Arsene are the same. Whinge whinge whinge apparently.

  22. Tricky says:

Joseph – it’s not just about this year though is it. Its t
he past years of inactivity in strenghening the team that is now starting to cost us very dear. The sooner we get rid of the myopic French idiot the better

  23. George says:

@derek o reilly – sod off then, you’re no fan of The Arsenal and you’re not wanted.

@the article. What the hell does it matter to you? Just another excuse to whine and moan.

  24. john says:

i agree what is wrong with him,its about time we got a manager that has ambition, all these players we are supose to sign heard it all before

  25. Michael says:

Remember how we missed out on Chris Smalling in January. We puttered away and ManU signed him from under our noses. I too would like to hear a surprise signing one of these days. Other teams get their signings done in a couple of days, ours seem to drag on for weeks. We do sign young kids out of the blue though.

  26. PTangYangKipperBang says:

Sinbad, when are you not cheesed off about Arsenal? The idiocy that abounds around your blogs is unbelievable. One comment seems to scoff at important people at Arsenal putting “long term security” first. F*****g unbelievable. I honestly believe that some of these glory hunting morons would really jeopardise our long term security just so they could sign a Kaka, Tevez or someone. Oh and you’re right Sinbad, Man U don’t fook about with signings; they just go out and quickly buy Berbatov for £32 mill. Or Veron for £27. After moving to a new stadium in the middle of a global recession expensive flops like these could have really damaged our beautiful club. I love Arsenal and anybody who would jeopardise it just so as they can play trumps with their mates needs a smack in the mouth.

  27. BigL says:

When is the next share holder meeting? I seem to remember Wenger didn’t make the last one and said something like, judge me on my signings in (August?).

  28. Alan says:

Spot on, I can’t believe how he re-uses the same comments year after year. Look through the press releases on arsenal.com and you’ll see the same shit every summer

  29. Gunner10 says:

I think its really unfair to make up quotes about what Wenger said and then call him a liar.

He has not said he WILL sign 2 world class players, where you people get that from? He said “If we bring some players in then they have to be experienced players.”

Learn to read properly before you start lying about Wenger, look at what IF means in a dictionary.

He said we would sign a player before the world cup and he did, Chamakh… he said he would only sign a defender if Gallas leaves… as far as I know Gallas is still an Arsenal player… yes, he is likely to leave but hasnt yet.

So… using actual quotes (all my info is from Arsenal.com) where has he lied?

Senderos left but we didnt use him for like 3 years, so he doesnt need to be replaced, DJ is back and atm that means we have 1 more defender than last season.

The future of Campbell, Gallas and Sylvestre is likely to be dealt with when Wenger comes back from S.Africa.

What is wrong with Wenger being there? doesnt he deserve time off? and even if he was in London working… do you think Gallas and Campbell and Sylvestre are at home chilling and can just pop in for a chat?

All those defenders are most likely thousands of miles away on really posh holidays with their families, thats what salaries of £50k+ a week buy you during the off season… would you leave your mobile on when you are seeking peace on your holiday? I wouldnt.

  30. PETE says:

The moral of the story is, don’t believe what you read in the press!!

  31. admin says:

Or what Wenger says on Arsenal.com Pete :)

  32. jamesb says:

stop moaning yes we would all like £20m transfers and big names coming into our club but this isn’t fifa.

we don’t need tones of transfers this year, last year we were close to the title just failed because of injuries, we have 1 more striker than last year, cesc isn’t leaving this year only midfielder gone is merida which isn’t going to harm us and lansbury JET ramsey and wilshere miles better than him anyway, and defence we may lose gallas who i feel is bad for morale anyway we may lose silvestre n senderous which will probally make us stronger! we will get a defender in and hopefully a keeper thats all we need

and wengers right though current players will be like new signings, djourou rosicky rvp eduardo all missed lots of time through injury they will play more next year and find their top form as rosicky and dudu know if they have bad year next year they will be out. vela and theo know they need to step it up and can only improve next year. and say what you like about players like diaby denilson and bendy but they have another years experince and will improve.

and yes youngsters coming through like, wilshere, lansbury, JET, nordviet, bartley and after xmas wellington will make squad bigger and make copetition.

yes we haven’t signed many players but only other club who have are city and they will not be winning it next year all they want is 4th. chelseas players are getting older and ballack and cole out for benyoun isn’t an improvement. utd got smalling and hernandz but they ain’t huge signings and will not win them the ;league, arsenal just NEED 1 defender and 1 keeper to be real challengers IMO any other signings like cole or another defender are a bonus

get behind the team and stop putting them and wenger down we won’t win anything with negativity

  33. johnny boy says:

You kind of summed it up with the bit at the end – about buying the new shirt… divvy.

  34. Gooner get ya says:

I am eager for a new signing as is every other Arsenal fan but we have to try and be realistic here. We have been mortgaged up to the eyeballs in a global recession and you want us to buy a shiny new car every year and put us in more debt to keep up with jones’. We are now getting to a stage where we can afford to buy but we don’t want to start throwing money around too much otherwise player prices will sky rocket ala Dzeko. I am sure we will sign players.

  35. danny says:

I also find it annoying when wenger refuses to sign immediate replaements. I mean.. A goalkeeper and Cente Backs are URGENTLY NEEDED.
Man United spent £10 million on smalling even though they have ferdinand, vidic, brown, evans. So they now have 5 ready to play CB’s. At the moment we have 1. Vermalen. Djorou is a gamble. Nordveit is untested. I would personally let one of them go on loan to a premier league side (Fulham/Newcastle) and sign Hangeland and Steven Taylor. These players are the only decent defenders wenger would buy as they will not be expensive. All i ask is for arsenal to have the same numbers of quality defenders that united and chelsea have.

And Keep an eye on jussi jaskellain. He will end up at a top club soon and will perform miracles for them. Why the fuck cant wenger see what i see. Shwzter,Freidel, even Howard would make a vast improvement to what we have. Attacking wise we are fine. But t is vital that we sign as much defensive backup as poosible. THERE WILL BE INJURIES NEXT SEASON … INJURIES GALORE!!!!

  36. Gooner1 says:

What is up with you pricks on here!

We moved to a new stadium 4 years ago and it was always the case that we wouldn’t be competing financially to start with. Wenger has brought the club forward hugely and through the stadium move (most new stadiums relegate clubs initially!) The aim was always to keep the squad competitive!

Wenger will buy what we can afford and only if it will improve the squad. This is real world football not championship manager!

  37. joseph king says:

You lot do need to grow up. Wenger has won more than every other manager in the prem put together outside AF. We have never failed to be outside the top 4, look how the scum celebrate making the top 4 for the first time. No one has bought anyone apart from City. Chelsea team are fading and were fortunate but ultimately deserved to win the league. Man u can no longer financially operate as they did due to the glazers, Liverpool are fucked. Personally i dont even think Wenger should spend the money if he does have it. I’m sure half of you that say we should be signing “world class” players moan about the amount they own. Its only football. Besides, on paper Arshavin is our most “world class” player, but besides his Anfield heroics what has he actually done? the money we have should be kept to ensure the safety and security of our club. I am always frustrated that we don’t buy anyone and that more leave than come in. but when you think objectively, football is a business , it would not succeed to have more in than out. After all it’s only football…….maybe you should get more interests in your lives, or get mare sex, coz football really isn’t THAT important.

  38. Charlie Drake says:

Great stadium, Champions League every season and competing for everything. If that isn’t good enough for you then this isn’t the club for you. So FO, and no, you’re not entitled to your opinion! Sling your F***ing hook!!!

  39. haider says:

fantastic topic ,,,it is true Wenger is going to say ,oh we were close to sign this or that..
and we are waiting for lots & lots of fairy tale stories.

  40. Goona says:

Sinbad you’re sailing in the right direction wish our manager was as he’s slowly leading this club up the Swanee and on to the rocks and I agree with everything you say. Slowness in signings is awful either he’s got the lolly or he ain’t. Taking all that while (which is usual) to sign this unknown centre half with the fans left completly in the dark until the club decide to announce or when his lordship comes back from the world cup. Wouldn’t it be great if he brought a few well known experienced signings with him? well we can live in dreams can’t we??? other clubs are signing quality players.
If we don’t watch out we may not get into Europe next year wonder how all your knockers will feel then when the Spuds do and we don’t. Gawd what a nightmare!!!!!

  41. Rich says:

I would reallyhate to be like you lot (That’ll be the negative brigade, not the few flashing beacons of sense amongst the comments) And would especially hate to be like Sinbad. Imagine living your football supporting life in such angst and angiush all the time. What would make you happy? Us to win the leauge and Champions league EVERY season? How many clubs do you know have done that? Don’t get me wrong, it would be great if we did. But that is an unrealistic target, which will only make you feel shit.
Secondly, how do you know the multitude of players names you band around like cheap confetti actually WANT to play for Arsenal? This is not Championship manager.
My advice? If you support Arsenal, support Arsenal. Accept that there will be spells of success and spells of faliure. Celebrate the trophies when we win them (and we will again – even the most blinkered of negative fans like Sinbad knows that deep down) and be sad when we don’t.
Most of all, enjoy the ride!
Once a Gooner, always a Gooner.

  42. RealityBites says:

“There was a private conversation that took place in the boardroom and assurances have been made at the highest possible level,” Hill-Wood said. “Arsenal do not expect those to be broken.

“I was not privy to the conversation, but was told about it. They said to us they are not interested [this summer]. It was a recent conversation, as recent as the time that they played us in the Champions League in fact as we got a bit upset because of all the media speculation.

This is the lie Hill Wood told us Arsenal fans when he stated there was an agreement with Barca that they would not make a hostile bid for Cesc this summer. When Arsenal issued their strong rebuttal, saying that Cesc was not for sale at any price why wasn’t this agreement referred to? Because it was a LIE – there was no such agreement.

“I have definite transfer targets and I have been talking to people but I will not tell you to who,” he said.

“I believe the earlier you settle your team the better it is and the less anxiety you have” “unless there is an exception there that nobody knew before. Also post-World Cup the prices are always artificial.” he continued.

This is the lie AW told us Arsenal fans when he stated he would be buying players BEFORE the World Cup. Funnily enough around the same time the season tkt renewals were due.

I could spend all day recounting lie after lie force fed down Arsenal’s fans throats – everything from Fizman hard hat n’all standing on the Emirates building site telling us AW had 40m to spend to AW lying at the Euro 2008 about having his ‘cheque book with him’.

I am so sick of the lies!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  43. Sam says:

There is no doubt that as a financial model of a current world class club arsenal are a shining example, but some of the idiots on here claiming that it’s childish to expect investment to remain competitive are morons, we don’t need stupid mega 30m signings we need good quality back up bodies. We have quality throughout the squad but with one or 2 clever additions we would be more than competitive. More unexpected gems like TV would do me fine, I don’t want the superstar carnival, I just fail to understand how everyone other than wenger can see the glaring holes in our squad. To me chamakh looks like one of those clever signings as does koncienly if we wrap them up with and maybe a keeper I’ll be fairly happy, Joe cole would be a surprise addition, but a good way of showing are intent for the season.

If wenger fails to make those additions due to his stubborn ways he should be fully accountable come the end of the season. If I hear the phrase ” like a new signing again” it will be too soon, but his unwavering faith in his players will either pay dividends of fail miserably, either way this season is the sharp end. It could be worse we could have that saggy faced spud c*nt from up the road ad out manager!!.

  44. Lady Arsenal says:

Ah good old ‘Arsenal Action’, whose only action appears to be sitting on their fat arses in front of a screen. Fair enough you can’t write, i suppose you’re not educated. But all these arse-licking comments like ‘spot on, I agree, Wenger is a liar. Sinbad you’re amazing, I love you’ etc. who the fuck writes them? Can there really be people that stupid/bored/inbred?

My nugget of wisdom for you all – if Sol leaves, we will have only 1 player left in the squad with a Premier League medal, and he was a back-up LB. 6 years after the best side England has ever seen.

  45. Jay says:

You idiots go fuck yrself and dont support Arsenal…I think it would be better off if u guys support Ipswich/Coventry/Leeds United….FYI, Arsene do not buy STARS…He Creates Stars…Look at the likes of Adebayor, Henry, Fabregas…for instance….He created them…he gave them a chance and screw Barca & Man C – They grabbed them and are tryin to grab Fab as well…Well if Wenger buys quality players and train them and then lose them…Wat’s the use of buying then….Its more like a trading biz in football nowadays…The passion for money is more than the passion for the game…Wenger is the right man for the Job in Arsenal. I do not see another person more capable or suitable than Wenger…He knows we need a defender and we are getting one soon…He has to make the decisions right and thats why he is seated as a Manager…Imagine if he would have bought Berbatov for 32 Mil or Aqualani for 20 Mil (who sat on the bench for more than 1/2 the season)??U guys are still gonna get back screwing wenger is a dumb fuck….He will not be as silly as DUMB Ass Fergie to buy Berbatov…lolz…Well morale of the story…Stop screwing wenger as he has done alot for Arsenal and the team by itself is like a Family…

  46. G10 says:

Man City wrap business up quicker than it takes Wenger to tell a gaggle of gathered hacks that Diaby is like a new player…

  47. Goona says:

Amazing really anybody who knocks the way our boss or should I say bank manager deals with transfers is either accused of being anti Arsenal or worse still Spuds in disguise. Come off it lads and lassies can you not see that quite a few clubs a few years ago who were miles behind us are catching up on us fast and if we don’t watch out we’re going to be left behind and all true and I mean true supporters can see this happening and that’s the reason why they speak out. Those that support the past glories of over 5 years ago are just living in cloud cuckoo land and I wonder if they’ll feel the same way if and when we don’t make the top 4 and not get a european spot next season and for many more seasons at the rate we’re going. Do not forget we have lost the majority of very important games in those 5 years now I wonder how that can be? c’mon wake up you Gooners! and tell our bank manager to start spending on experience.

  48. Football Gifts says:

Sounds to me like Arsenal fans are slowly running out of patience with Arsene, one more season without a trophy and he could be a Goner.

  49. Cardinale says:

I’m just amazed that Koscielny has been announced officially for several hours, and still no post from anyone at Arsenal Action. What’s going on?

Forgive me for my ignorance, but is it only when there is something you perceive as negative about Arsenal, that you all feel the need to comment?

I’m not criticising here, as I share your frustrations about wanting to win, but seriously, if you’re going to claim to be supporters, how about sharing the positives with the same vigour that you love to express the negatives. Just a thought!

  50. OldMan says:

I’m not the first and won’t be the last but what is wrong with some of you people?

Would you rather we return to the perceived good old days before Wenger? Were any of you even Arsenal fans before Wenger?

    Go and have a good look on Wikipedia or wherever you get your facts and;
look at our league positions under Wenger compared to before Wenger.
Look at our signings compared to before he arrived.
Look at Highbury compared to the Grove.
Look at the way we play now compared to the way before Wenger.

Once you’ve done that, consider that maybe your glory hunting expectations were raised too high by the almost faultless season or the media applauding Arsenal continuously for many years and move on to Chelsea or Man City forums instead.

On topic however and you may realise that we’re no slower than any other club when it comes to signing players.

The Berbatov affair was in the papers for well over a year before it happened on deadline day.
How long was Ronaldo to Real Madrid in the papers…?

It’s not like the old days where Bergkamp would suddendly appear in an Arsenal shirt or Klinsmann in a spurs shirt and that would be the first we knew about it!

    Lastly – Lee says:
