Arsenal are a joke in the transfer market

It really is a joke the way Arsenal do there business in the transfer market. why do we always do this?

We always try and get players on the cheap, Savilla said that Arsenal’s offer for Squillaci was insufficient. And now Arsenal have angered Fulham with a second £2million bid for Mark Schwarzer – the SAME as one rejected in May. Now talks have stalled after furious Fulham threw out the cheeky bid.

AW have said there is considerable money to spend, So why are we hunting around in pound shops hunting for bargains?… if they are the players we want then just pay the going rate. Squilaci and Schwarzer are hardly world class players and for the pair of them it would cost us no more then £10m, again shows a small club mentality.

£10m to get the players we need and Arsenal are refusing to do so and are willing to wait till the last min just to save a few pennies. But its a dangerous game Arsenal are playing. They did this with Alonso a few years ago and missed out.

We made £34m in transfer fees last season and still money in the bank from this years dealings plus Christ knows how much saved in losing 8 wages off the books.

What I don’t get is this… With the sales of Traore, Simpson, Fran and Eduardo..plus saving on wages from Gallas, Silvestre, Campbell & Senderos. With only 2 players coming in and 1 of them was a FREE how can we still be penny pinching?

Be prudent with the money, but £10m in getting 2 needed players ain’t going to send us into Leeds and Pompey is it?… Its just Arsenal being tight f**king wads.

Nobody can balance the books like Arsene, and that my friends is the ONLY reason why he has just got a new deal at Arsenal.

Do we need keeper? YES. Do we need a CH? YES. Do we need a DM as back up for Song? YES!

With only 11 days till the window shuts, Wenger and his puppet board are playing games in the transfer market, JUST PAY THE GOING RATE!

I doubt they will buy anyone and Wenger will come out with the usual “garbage “of we tried but no one was selling”

Every f**king years the same. Injuries followed by Wenger saying “They will be like a new signing” when they return.

And then we get the great news on Arsenal.com to try and paper over the cracks by trying to get us all excited about the f**king clock. or the great news that we have just signed some 14 yr old from Timbuktu.

IM SICK OF THIS!….Where’s the ambition to win things anymore? Arsenal are a big club with a small club mentality.

  1. David Wanyoike says:

We will never win anything so long as AW is the Manager. He will keep on scratching his backside untill the window is closed and start whining about injuries. MAN U who are supposedly highly indebted have bought excellent players. So have Liverpool. Our books are allegedly very good yet we can’t afford to pay 3M for schwarzer or a third rated CB. Now that Frimpong is injured, we need a cover for Alex Song. AW will not buy, why dont we get rid of him and bring a Manager who will win trophies.

  2. Micky says:

This goes on to tell everyone the thinking and reasoning of most guys here. The article is just crap and tells me you do not know anything about the business side of football. Arsenal is doing the correct thing. what do you want AW to pay for a 37 year old.£4mil.

I know you need to write something to keep your blog up but please give us something good. I come here everyday during lunch but you are getting desperate lately.
You use to be great but you let me down there.

  3. Elias Glasgow says:

Really, we are jokes of the highest order. Suprisingly how many good players issued “come and get me plea” to Arsenal? My memory is full with names of players that were linked to Arsenal. Our manager is not serious about improving our team. I wont be suprised if we dont sing anymore player during this transfer window. Remember what happened last season when Van Persie was injured. We had a chance of buying a replacement striker during January transfer window. But he opted not to buy anybody. Every season he always says he believes in the players he is having. Last week he said that our current squad has got what it takes to win the league. He even said that a goalkeeper which is going to play against Liverpool, is going to be our number one for this season.

  4. Edmond Dantes says:

All hail Lord Wenger and God save the Arsenal

I have major issues with the defensive players that have come in recent years.

    1. Silvestre (Only God knows why? And Arsene of course!)
    2. Re-signed Campbell (past his prime, I know it was a short-term solution but come on Arsenal should not have been in that situation in the first place)
    3. No quality keeper since Lehmann

Ok Vermaelen has come in but that does not make up for other mediocre defensive transfers.
Koscielny looks decent. But we only as good as the back-up players. So we will be left wanting unfortunately.

  5. Splicer says:

You can all laugh at Man Citeh for paying over the odds for all these decent players (20 odd million for Milner!!!) but it gets the fans excited and aren’t we the ones that pay our had earned supporing this club? C’mon Wenger give us something to get excited about.

  6. Welshman says:

Has it occurred to gunner fans Wenger may not be interested in getting a gk and cd.This could be a ploy to say the players he wants are not worth the price quoted by Man C/Fulham/Sevilla. Then he could with justification rely on his current players. We won’t know if my my hunch is right until the tw closes.
However I do know that he shd be held 150% repeat 150% responsible ,if the gunners continue to underperform due to his not getting the required players.

  7. Bladders says:

I’m fed up with everyone wrongly blaming Wenger for not getting Xavi Alonso. The only reason we didn’t get him was beacuse Rafa rang and asked to stall as there wer eproblems in the Barry negotiations and we know what happened there!!!

  8. kiety mighty says:

    Couldnt agree more.
But how i wish we just spend big for one season get in about 4/5 world class players and then go back to being tight.
dont know why he is spending this much money on squallaci when he could have saved gallas from going to the scums, is squallaci better than gallas? but then i suppose gallas likes causing havoc by pulling all the girls towels in the dressing rooms.

  9. aaron mc says:

THERE IS A STUPID ARGUMENT ERUPTING HERE
I CAN FULLY UNDERSTAND BOTH SIDES…OBVIOUSLY WE CANT COMPETE WITH THE LIKES OF MAN CITY AND WE DONT WANNA GO DOWN THE LEEDS UNITED PATH

BUT EVERY ARSENAL FAN HAS THE RIGHT TO VOICE THEIR OPINION ON SIGNINGS

WOULD IT HURT US TO SPEND 30 MILLION ON A SUPERSTAR – ABSOLUTELY NOT
WOULD IT AFFECT ARE STATUS AS A PREMIERLEAGUE CLUB IF WE SIGNED-
    SHAY GIVEN FOR 10MILLION
BREDE HANGELAND FOR 7MILLION OF COURSE IT WOULDNT!!! REMIND YOURSELF THAT WINNING SILVERWARE WOULD PAY FOR THEM PLAYERS

  10. ISRAELI GUNNER says:

The only ambition of the bed people who ran our club,is to steel as much money as they can from us the arsenal fans.
What annoys me most,is the fact that they are doing these year in year out and you the British arsenal fans are so surprise…….
We must do something urgently in order to save our club,meaning-through those bad people(especially the Hollywood’s of these world).
I must Say thunk that Wanger is to blame to,his sick ego (since the invisibles)is depriving our club of success on the pitch.
You must raise your voice (especially during matches)in order to save our club future achievements.
I urge you fellow gunners, please, you must realise that you CAN speak against the people who run OUR club (including Wanger)WE ARE THE CLUB,and we have every right to do so!!!!!!!!!
I wrote this kind of message for the last 5 years and no one listen, that is why we are 5 years without a trophy…..WAKE UP GREAT GUNNERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  11. Gunner says:

Arsenal has been the most fortunate of the clubs in EPL to have a manager of the calibre of AW. He has such financial finesse and foresight that has kept a big club like Arsenal afloat & rocking even during troubled economic times, where clubs spending more than 50m euros are not able to match us even if we are small spending. I think we all need to appreciate this, where on such low costs, we are not only strong title contenders, but also bright future prospects of Football in Europe.

@SINBAD – Support in what AW does, he has been proving himself as a world-class manager for the past 12 odd years. AW and the board knows more the we guys, where I would like to state that buying a player is not the way to strenghten our side, but assessing the player’s attributes and evaluating them is before transfer. Realistically, we cannot just splurge. This, I believe is not a small club mentality, and a Big Futuristic mentality that has enabled our club to arguably be the envy of others in financial and statistical terms….

  12. camaro says:

it is plain to see why people are getting frustrated. if arsenal were mid or bottom table team and had eleven average players fans would accept this because this is where you belong with a team of average players. but what is frustrating people and why the fans are crying out for a couple of signings is the fact, that arsenal are a top team and for the past few yrs we have had 8 or 9 rreally good players and the other 2 to 3 have been way below avg and have let the rest of the team down and have cost us trophies. if wenger would just buy a good reliable keeper and another reliable CB for cover , then arsenal would have a great chance of winning things.

  13. Talking out your wenger says:

Hey Ben Smith, you’re exactly the type of customer I seek out when I want to run a ponzi scheme.

  14. genuin says:

I agree with this post its spot on. Sinbad is not saying that we should go and spend wildly but what is necessary for the to buy the players needed that will make the difference. Why does Wenger come out and say we have $…million to spend if maybe there isn’t ? He consistently waits until the final hour of the transfer window to sign someone and then says “We tried to sign …” as if this will make fans feel better that we almost signed a player.Another thing is he says “players coming back will be like new signings” thats just a load a BULL.The players at the club are so fragile before they even walk unto the pitch they are injured and out for months. No one is asking for lavish spending but for quality signings needed because we all know “we have a lot of quality in the side” LOL

  15. Chief Gooner says:

i have felt the same way. i agree its very frustrating.
but i also understand where arsene is coming from. as soon as we go for a player the club ask for more money. the important thing is these bids show he has acknowledged our weaknesses and is trying to do something.
who seriously thinks we should pay 4million for schwarzer. he’s 37 for christs sake. fulham are taking the piss.
we leave it alone and i bet they’ll come to us before september 1st. they dont want an unhappy keeper. in the meantime lets look at getting someone else.
i have found lately the best way to deal with the frustration is to ignore all the speculation. lets see what happens and discuss on september 1st.

  16. john ashton says:

i think it’s time for mr wenger to go same thing every season for the past five years, can’t even get a player for 3 million what a twat!

  17. Goonoo says:

Ben Smith – your comments are a beacon of sanity in a sea of short-termism and idiocy.

  18. AshburtonG says:

Agree that good negotiation is to play hard ball with ten days to go. Agree also that Arsenal’s financial and general management is respected by business and all potential investors. Agree also that we’ve come a long way since the days when we were the same size (worldwide reputation, ground capacity etc) as Spurs, Ever5ton, Man City, Liverpool etc whilst still living within our means. However, I wish Arsene & co would be a bit more honest – despite what they say, silverware is NOT our top priority in the short term. We’d rather keep the ship on a steady course than risk multi-millions on established world-class players that can win titles. Let’s face it, we’d all be amazed if these “2nd-Tier” stars helped us to the type of silverware we’re told is top priorty !! Sure, Arsene would be universally hailed as a genius, but I’m sure that’s not his motivation – He’s cash-strapped.
So, personnaly I’m happy with the course we’re on, and love the style we play, but would like a little more honesty when it comes to telling the fans exactly what the strategy is !

  19. Mike says:

    OOOHhhh Yeaaahhh!!!

Small spending doesn’t get me think we ‘re competing on every competition.. I would rather see AW spend a good fat price for someone in the list below:

Micah Richards-Modio Diakhité-Steven Taylor- THIAGO SILVA (AC Milan) – Mexes- Hangeland let’s try him again – Mathisen – Upson

And of course I can’t wait to see a brave man btween the sticks like Schwarzer or Given .. without them it’s like having an old ma at your vip entrance door .. who would be scared of her ?!?!?

  20. Leffe,Sweden says:

    I agree too! They said 6..we said 4….They said 45…we said 30..hehe

Ok, we will do with our “Have faith squad”

  21. dilly: says:

Remember when Wenger said, he will sort all his dealing b4 pre-season lol,

  22. gooner sense says:

would u go to buy a car that someone has at £1500 and offer them £1500 right away? no u wouldn’t u would try and knock them down. Maybe Man City go “hey your player is worth 10m here’s 15m”. We are Arsenal and also a business and we try to get the best price we can. Fair enough if we don’t buy the Needed CB and GK ill be pissed, but for now let the business men do their work.

  23. April says:

well,i personally think Ben Smith speaks out my mind, but as ISRAELI GUNNER said,it is down to British Arsenal fans to speak up, to let our voice heard….i wish i could do the same, but here in China i do not get that much chance.

  24. Professor T says:

    @ Ben Smith

I did not say any where that i would like Arsenal to go out and spend mega money on big named players..

again, another example of over doing your explanation..

Not one Arsenal fan that i know would want Arsenal to go out and bankrupt itself on big names spending £25m a pop….. Everyone is up for getting a bargain and turning him into a £15m player… and i think most sensible fans support Wenger’s policy..

but what most people also want is to stop penny pinching so much.. there has to be a point that to get the player you want and spend an extra £1 or 2 million which will not brake the bank…. i talking we bid £5m they want £6m and Arsenal walking away just because it exceed Arsenal’s valuation… it’s petty penny pinching…

Heard a story that we were in for Xavi Alonso at one stage.. we bid £12m Liverpool wanted £14m.. we walked away… what a difference he would have made 2 seasons ago if true. that wouldn’t of broken the bank at all…

I think we are all thinking along the same lines… just expressing it differently..

    Bonjour and good luck

  25. Mabs says:

@Geogre then why are you hear you fu**ing Cu*t!!!!!!!!!!!! “This blog is crap” then why are you wasting your time here? If you don’t like the discussion of this blog then just fuck off you cunt! I would love to kick your ass! But saying that online is like the weakeast thing to say is it not… You dont like then dont come here, you dont see people voulterning to get tortued do you? so why are you.. Great article the goalkeeper is hardly a step up from alumina though… Squalliq that who we need someone who is mature but not to old like gallas, slivertser and campbell. This allows him to play at a CB prime at arsenal whilst letting the young guns like djourou not take on too much responblity like when wenger put Gibbs, hoyte and traoue into CL semi-final and quater final matches because we had no depth in squad instead we us upcoming young players who aren’t ready yet. The club is the richest in england in terms of no debt seeing as it makes a healthy income and we can’t spend 6 million on CB who is established whilst we but a CB that played in league 1 of the french divsion for 10 million? Where is the finicial clarity in that wenger?

  26. Mabs says:

@Randy gibson when did any of the arsenal fans on here say, we want to buy a 19 year old with anger problems for 24 million pounds! No one here wants us to buy robinio or kaka or ronaldo for 100 million pounds… But is it too much to ask for a CB (which we need) for 6 million pounds. When did asking for that make us sell outs. No arsenal fan wants to see wenger not succed in his youth phislophy, i wish we win every with young players but the fact that we have over 200 million pounds worth of transfer money saved up in the last 4 years and us spending around 40 million of it on 4 players is not right.. Asking for 10 million for two poistion that will stregnth the depth of our sqaud for not just one season but for atleast 2 with the keeper and 5 with the CB. No one is asking for big money spending just siginficant buys no matter if he pays 100,000 for someone in the championship, but if the guy is worth 100,000 don’t give them a price of 80,000. And trust me arsenal fans no how much everyone laughs at our team for being so cheap.

  27. dave harrison says:

w’v nt hd a fwd snce hnry, gk snce sman, that shows how mch ambtion we hav.the past winnrs hav the best playrs, looney, bogda, 20-30 gls each. who is going to get that for us. NO CHANCE of wnning out. so get real and hope for 1/4fnl cl,out of fa cp, and lucky to get 4thspot.

  28. dave says:

With Almunia, Arsenal is going to win nothing again. For three years,I have not spend anything on Arsenal because they refused to invest on good players especially the goalkeeper.
I’m really happy to see Barcelona playing against Arsenal at the Emirates last season which gave AW a real good lesson on playing attacking football. As long as Arsenal is not investing on a great goalkeeper,I’m not going to support Arsenal. Besides, Fabregas should leave ASAP. There is no need to waste your precious time.

  29. Wilsheres dad says:

AW’s approach is fine, providing he gets his men in the end i.e. before the transfer window closes, but he is playing a tricky game this time round. Everyone is aware that he’s in the market for a CB & keeper, so the strong hand is with the selling club, especially as they are not desperate to sell.

The problem is that most big players simply don’t see AFC as a big club. Nothing won for 5 years, a cautious signing policy (£15 mill record for someone (Arshavin) no one else was in for) & comparitively low top wages cap means that no big or up & comming player is interested if Barca, Real, Inter, manU, Chelsea & now Man City are showing any interest in them.

  30. Smudger says:

If you’re “sick of this” why don’t you shut up posting about it?

The fact is, in the real world, transfers occur after negociation. We don’t just rock up and throw £10m at a player who’s worth £4m. Schwarzer doesn’t want to be at Fulham, we made them a good bid (reportedly £2m) for an average keeper who will be 38 in October. If that’s the maximum we’ll pay for him, and he’s handed in a transfer request, then Fulham risk having an unhappy, well-paid player on their books. Them rejecting that offer might prompt us to go after other targets for which our budget will be different.

Your views on football are incredibly immature and you clearly don’t have any grasp of the business aspect. Amusingly, every post on here is negative. It’s funny how all your supporters are as immature and illiterate as you too. Jog on son.

  31. jeoff says:

hey guys arsene fail to buy players last year when we needed them most and we fail to win a e leaque and tasted p1 at the last games we were beaten where we were not supose to be beaten.our team does not have depth and every one see that last year .i dont think a normal person can keep faith for five years.he has said this for five years and even today he is still having faith at liver pool they were unable to penetrate defence .even when fab and van p are back we still look very mean .last year injuries and this year theyve already heat us hard still not buying .if he fail to buy in october we will be out of top five i bet that

  32. AlwaysGunner says:

There has to some thing the arsenal board are not telling the fans, it’s just absolutely ridiculous what they are doing trying to sign a GK and CD. These are two positions that will most likely determine the kind of season we will have, and they are reluctant to do what it takes to sign them. This club could be twice bigger than it is, if they can seize the initiative to strenghten and win some thing this season. The pieces are in place, but to complete it, we need atleast these two signings, and I am not saying we should break the bank. If we spend about 15 million to get these two players and win the premiership, it would be a bargain. I hope they make the right move because many new Arsenal fans I know have given up, and many more diehard fans are so disillusioned. IT SHOULD NOT TAKE THIS LONG TO SIGN A 37 YR OLD GK!!!!

  33. VILLA says:

No Arsenal is not a big club with a small club mentality….. They are a small club in a BIG STADIUM

  34. Jazbo says:

What a crap posting, this must be one the worst blogs on the internet, if you have so many issues with my club then go support Man City, as you only want to see money wasted on over priced, over hyped players.
Thank god the school holidays are nearly over

  35. decky says:

100% smudger!!! IF YOU DONT LIKE IT GO SUPPORT CITY

  36. daddy says:

    Well said Jazbo!

  37. Nobbytryard says:

You are all right Wenger is a joke in the transfer market , he promises so much and delivers so little , but has nobody else noticed we have’nt been seriously active in the transfer market since David Dean got the boot . Surely he was the transfer dealer for Wenger . God how I’d love to see him back , instead of these faceless money grabbing jerks guiding our success starved ship.

  38. Wilsheres dad says:

This has far more to it than paying the least possible transfer fee.
Sometimes the cheapest deal isn’t in the best interest of the club & this is a case in point.
The unrest that this protracted issue has caused amongst the goalkeepers & probably other players in the squad, could well cost us far more than the extra £’s that could have been spent to complete
this deal quickly. We’ve had to start the season with 4 keepers who have been made fully aware, and in public, that the Boss doesn’t think they’re good enough. It’s bad enough to have to play at least the first 2 games of the new season with which ever one is chosen, (2 points dropped last week-end??) but what happens if Arsene can’t sign a new keeper? Is he really going to put an arm round Almunia & Fabianski & tell them everythings OK now, that he was only joking?? Is he going to tell the outfield players not to worry, because Almunia or Fabianski were really his first choices all along??
Both players have been around the club a while & their mates in the squad are going to think that this has been handled very shoddily.
This is no way to prepare the squad for the new season & no way to treat Almunia & Fabianski.

  39. José says:

You guys should shut up, what would we be without wenger? Do you guys realy want to be like clubs like Chelsea and Man City? They are artificial, atleast Arsenal Football Club means something, so why not support Chelsea or Man City if you so despratly want Arsenal to be like them

  40. Arsenalred says:

    Dearest Tickets CHEAPEST TEAM

    Smaller squad than last year,
Same old ARSENE TALKING the same story for the last 4 years “Potential” & “I belive” would cahill of Bolton cost so much? would the 2 points that Schwatzer coukld have saved us at anfield be worth an extra 1 million at the end of the season ( Yes I know their keeper gave us a goal) Do you really think that he will buy 3 decent players next week ? He seems to be on a suicide mission trying to win something without buying Anyone we have ever heard of.
And Yes I WILL be there tommorow chearing the boys on

  41. BigL says:

@jose, decky and the rest of the AKB brigade here.
Instead of telling real Arsenal fans who care deeply about the club to go and support City or Chelsea, why don’t you do us all a favour and go and support Blackpool.

You obviously don’t care about winning so I’m sure Blackpool will be a club that will meet your needs.

  42. adil says:

wengers mentality is that if he can buy a donkey for 5m than why waste an extra 5m on a horse while the donkey can do the same things but just at a slower pace…

  43. jurgen says:

Im thinking this season we will end up as slightly above mid table mediocrity. we play 38 games but are only capable of winning 70% of those games , all against lower teams. the teams above us we will struggle for full points and thats how they win championships. Fabregas is taking the mickey too, he wants away on his terms by refusing to ask for a transfer bcos it will cost him a lot of dosh.Lets all get real, cif we dont pay thefat lady to sing then she wont sing. transfer on the cheap??means lost chances to progress to the heights we aspire to.

  44. José says:

@BigL. I love Arsenal, and i didnt start supporting them for the trophies e.g the new Chelsea, Man United and inevitably Man city fans, i started supporting them because of the way they play, i enjoy watching them, if they win nothing, i wont be upset, u will, we all know that wenger will leave one day, you guys who hate him will get ur wish, we’ll get sumone in who want to pay 25 mil 4 an average player or make a sound investment in a player for 30 mil, we will all sing his praises until he goes bad, then ull turn on him just like everyones doing to almunia and fabianski, so dont worry about what i say, we will buy big, just not yet because we have a smart manager at the helm, you wouldnt understand

  45. BigL says:

    @jose

Wenger will leave one day and when he does the club wont fall apart. We wont go into administration, the stadium won’t fall down and we’ll cope just fine. Not having won anything for 5 years years I doubt there are any bandwagon hangers-on left. They will have gone to Chelsea a long time ago, so I expect everyone here to be real fans.

Like you, I don’t care so much about the winning, its the TRYING to win that I care about. 10 years ago, at the start of every season I felt we were going to win something, if we didn’t it didn’t matter because I knew we were giving it out best shot. Skip forward to present day and its just one excuse after another, but it could be so much better IF we just invested in the team instead of saying they have more experience this seasons bla bla bla.

Look at it this way, with the team we have its amazing that each season we do so well. By putting in a couple of top notch signings we could be invincible for years to come. So why does Wenger insist on trying to do it the hard way.

I’m not saying sack Wenger, but I wish someone would give him a slap around the head and remind him that football is about 3 points and trophies, not shopping for unknown bargains and collecting interesting on the current account.

We have the best club in the world, we deserve to have the best players playing for it

  46. Ardian says:

You speak about that money like you are some Abou Daby owner “why not this and why not that”, you cannot pay a fortune for the players who are being potentially brought in the club as a temporary or backup players that is why!

  47. Ardian says:

By the way is this page truly made from Arsenal fans, cause whenever I see in newsnow posts comming from this page are extremely against all the Arsenal’s values which made them popular in every part of the world, which cannot be said the same for Tottenham for example. I suggest you to change your page name to spudsaction maybe u’ll get some understanding and hopefully you’ll end out “five years trophy drought” wining some carling cup.

  48. Magic Smelly Socks says:

Money in the bank and always on the look out for bargains – year 6 without a trophy is upon us.

The board are making a killing teh money in the bank is paying for a top heavy executive directors.

AW should leave as directors survive because of him.

  49. GoreAK says:

What bullshit. Another bandwagoning “Gooner” with a computer who knows fuck all and insists on proving it to the world. zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz….

Wenger is one of the very few sane managers in the transfer market BTW, and by far the best we have had in my time supporting the club. (Apologies to Bertie Mee OBE.)

  50. GoonerBostonUSA says:

    BREDE HANGELAND!!!???

I have no respect for ANY arsenal fan that bring up the Name Brede Hangeland…for crying out loud the guy is not Arsenal quality. he blows just show u know nothing about football

I sick and tired of Arsene, I used to fly to London to catch 3/4 games every year…if he doesnt buy anyone and we dont win anything once again I am done. I can watch every game now on the teli.
why spend my money when these arse hole doesnt want to spend just a bit more to plug the holes we have.
AND if Alumnia is still the Goalie on September 2, I am not even going to bother to fly and catch a game this year.
