[Ratings] Fabulous Fabianski Saves Arsenal

Partizan Belgrade 1 – 3   Arsenal

* Cleo (pen) 33 ——————- * Arshavin 15 * Chamakh 71 * Squillaci 82

Arsenal  beat Partizan Belgrade 1-3 to maintained their great start to this season’s Champions League.

Andrey Arshavin fired Arsenal ahead before Cleo levelled for Partizan with a penalty after Denilson’s handball.

Marko Jovanovic was sent off for a foul on Maroune Chamakh in the box, but Arshavin missed the penalty but Chamakh made amends with a header.

Sebastien Squillaci’s header from a corner extended the lead before Lukasz Fabianski saved Cleo’s late penalty.

Fabianski : 9/10 (Great night for the young keeper. Super pen save and then his confidence grew. Didn’t put a foot wrong) Man of the match
Sagna : 6.5/10 (Pretty solid at the back but wasteful with his crossing)
Squillaci : 7.5/10 (Poor start to the game and weak header back, But 2nd half was super and scored a fine header)
Djourou : 6/10 (Very poor start to the game and almost cost us when he was bulled off the ball, But better 2nd half)
Gibbs : 6/10 ( Not a great night for the young LB, Gave away a soft pen)
Rosicky : 7/10 (Super cross for the key 2nd goal, worked very hard )
Denilson : 6.5/10 ( Gave away the first pen for handball, made a great tackle in the first half )
A Song : 6/10 ( Very confused to what his role was tonight? Seems to be going forward alot and giving the ball away)
Wilshere : 8.5/10 (Great game, Set up the first with a amazing bit of vision and keep the ball well, Was kicked all over the park)
Arshavin : 6.5/10 (A very up and down night for the little russian, Scored the first then missed a load of chances and a pen)
Chamakh : 7.5/10 ( Worked very hard up front and scored the key 2nd, Also won the pen)

    Fabulous Fabianski?
Saved a scuffed penalty and shot straight at him.
Ran out the area to kick a ball into touch for no reason.
Lack of communication in the area caused 2 penalties.
If Fabianski is Arsenal keeper Sunday we will get smashed!

Worst thing that cud happen 2 Arsenal with Flappy making 2 good saves, Wenger will think he is World Class again.

Was hoping he made a mistake 2nite with us still winning.

the pen wasn’t blasted, but it was hardly an easy save either. and only someone determined to blame him could possibly put the second pen on his shoulders.

I thought Gibbs was man of the match and to nominate Fabianski is totally bizzare.

Wow. It really pisses me off when people want our ‘keeper to fail just so they can be proved right. Fabianski had a solid game tonight. How can anyone say that lat shot at the end was straight at him? It was a great reflex save!

Fucking get behind this team or fuck off down the road to shite hart lane. I’ve had enough of the false fans that insist that some arsenal players are crap and they refuse to give them any credit when they perform well. Thats not support, thats bullshit!

A great result for the Arsenal! Still I am worried about the cohesion of our defence. While they were energetic in parts, they were easily knocked off the ball and the game was far too open for comfort. I will not single anyone out because it was a collective trait. Please Arsene see that we become more difficult for teams to cut through us … like we used to be.

Lets enjoy the victiry! A game with all that is good and bad about Arsneal. Should have been cruising. Wasted chances, let the oppo. back in the game and then “struggled” to finsih them off. A necessary win!

And for once lets lay off blaming anyone for anything,,,,,,,,Geez!

Ston: You obviously are one of those Arsenal supporters who have stereotyped a player to the extent that even when he plays so well, you fail to give him credit. Fabianski had a top, top game today. Two match defining saves – penalty and his save in the end. He won’t play on Sunday, but even if he does, i’d not jump off a bridge. But it’s my opinion.

Fabianski had a good game. Fair play to him. But one good game doesn’t make him a great keeper. His track record suggests he is not able to go two or three games without making a costly mistake. When he has half a season of consistently sound goalkeeping behind him I’ll reconsider my opinion. Not before.

He can do all the best saves v team like Belgrade, but in the Prem he has a big target on his back 4 the opp & THAT where his fault lies not being commanding.

1). Thank you Joe. Very well said, it is NOT support.

2). Fabianski was key in the teame winning morale showing a deep focus (and this is in no way favoring him over Jack Wilshere for the man of the match.. but it is pretty close).. credit is due to him… he was very clever to realize the same player was going for the same angle he did in the first penalty… read it well. He had more courage and fight tonight… that was not an easy stadium to play in.

3). Did you see those fans? I was watching them on the television live more than five minutes after the game was over and they were still there chanting and singing as if their team had won the final. No I am not becoming a supporter of Partizan but I wish to see many more people that call themselves Arsenal supporters to learn something from these guys. Hats off to Partizan fans.

4). That being said, Partizan does play a “dirtier” football than the taste of Arsenal and the type of game it likes to play. Our team was well focused yet sloppier at other times.. It was quite an entertaining match to watch because it is like watching an experiment considering the squad selection and all the changes. Playing Fabianski today was successful and I am sure restored a lot of Lukas’ confidence and motivation. He needs to work on two things though… watch out for the times you decide to come out (though I like that he was not hesitant as Almunia was for the third goal against West Brom).. the other thing I would point out is his distribution is decent but not great sometimes, in the sense he hands the ball a bit too close to the other team’s strikers and a little bit too risky for my taste…. it looks like an accident waiting to happen… Ball distribution is very important for the goal keeper role and good decisions are key.

5). Well done Luke Fabianski you made me proud and the manager really sees something in you for a good reason… Now show that mean goalkeeper face and prove he was right. Now is the time.. and it has nothing to do with whether you play on Sunday or not.

SUPPORT your fucking team or do as Joe says – go down to the tiny totts at white shite lane !!

What is wrong with you people. Fabianksi had an average game at best. Things have got so dire we are raining compliments on our goalies when they play to the degree that is expected of them at this level.

Stons comment was right on the mark.

A goalkeeper can only do as well as he is presented with and Fabianski did almsot everything right tonight. To claim the penalty save was easy is a traversty. He was also confident in the air on numerous occassions and really grew into the game, taking command after the penalty save gave him some confidence. 1 or 2 great saves! Well done Fabianski.

ARSENAL WAS FRIGGIN AWESOME TONIGHT. Not perfect… “winning ugly” as come players commented through the summer was something we needed to learn. They were brave. A rough game… A mesmerizing crowd… 3 PENALTIES!!! 2 MISSED!

Partizan wanted to play tough so our team played tough! Our team adapted to the game very well and didn’t “switch off” like in the past after the Serbian team equalized. Arshavin was serious… active… so was Rosicky… Sharper than usual the two.
Chamakh.. playing all sorts of tricks not only in terms of football but in terms of mind games and playing by their game (he is very clever at knowing how to get the foul.. he is excellent at controlling his NERVE God bless him.)

    Super Jack…
Nothing I can say will do him justice. Mashallah God bless him he is a dream come true player. I cannot make one observation against his performance today. He was also very clever about getting the foul and refereeing today… he has however in the past been carded un-necessarily.. I still don’t know him well enough to know how controlled his temperament is.. but today he really sucked it in and fought hard.

Squillaci… He knows the way to the net! and quite honestly the biggest leader in defense using a wealth of experience to fend off the opposition… got himself into quite a few knocks here and there… very solid… Got more focused as the game came along. Even Djourou, who seemed out of place in the first 30 minutes.. picked up his game and got sharper. He needed to play.

very proud of the team tonite, dug in, passed it, dominated, silenced very hostile fans and got the 3 points… see you in the corner upper tier at the bridge…. were gonna win that too

security at the shed away turnstile confiscated my banner ‘you cant buy class’ written in russian last season the bastards!

I am afraid I am with Ston on that one.
The penalty save was not a great penalty. he got lucky by guessing the right side and he saved it.
However I clearly remember the mixup between him and Sagna resulting in him kickin the ball directly into touch.
Sagna was indicating to him to stay on his line so he could pass to him. That was very bad move.
The same thing with regard to the small number of corner Partizan got, he did not inspire confidence onthem.
At the bridge on Sunday, Drogba and Terry are likely to be more pro-active at set piece.
I was hoping for a mediocre performance for the good Polish goalkeeper be given a chance on Sunday.
Fabiansky may have had a decent game and his mistakes did not cost us the game, but in the long run he is simply not good enough.

The one that worried me is Arshavin. He is so reluctant to track back and help out the defense, sometimes you wonder whether we would not better off without him.
Especially away from home in tight game.

Without Nasri to inject some urgency the team looks flat and unable (or unwilling) to shoot.

I’ll see you in the Emirates next week.

We will see whose right Sunday. IF he plays and IF he plays like previous games.
Chelski FA cup. Porto CL. Wigan epl. Blackburn epl.
    Chances chances chances.
I’m sorry if this causes anyone offence, but when you lot start name calling when I’m pointing out facts, well, whose the wankers now eh!

I’m not the Ston from above BTW but I do believe that Fabianski was not as great as people think. He wasn’t REALLY tested, yes he saved a penalty but that’s a 50/50 on direction. Yes he’s reflexes were good, but I will not go over the moon for a keeping performance that should be the norm for a club like ours.

  31. The Law

To those saying they wanted Fabianksi to make a costly error last night so they could gloat this morning, all I have to say is: you guys are fucking idiots, and it sickens me that you lot can actually claim to support Arsenal. Fabianski had a good game, not a great one, but he was solid, and he dealt with pretty much everything that came his way. You could see how much saving the penalty meant to him from the way he roared afterward. You could see how much Fabianski having a good game meant to the entire team as they all congratulated him at the final whistle, even Tech 9.

That someone is rooting for a player on the team he claims to support to have a bad game is simply beyond belief. I will not tell you to fuck off to Spurs because as much as I hate those cunts, I wouldn’t wish your stark, raving stupidity on them. I can, however, tell you to put your head in an oven, and spare the rest of us your presence.

Funny how when ones expectations are exceeded, things seem great. Everyone expected Fabiaski to fail, but he did his job, nothing more, and compared to what he did before, it was great. But the truth is that Fabianski deserves a 7 or 7.5 rating. He did nothing wrong, and one doesn’t deserve a top rating for that, one gets it for doing exceptionally well. A penalty save is good, statistically a GK has a 50/50 chance of save, and Fabianske got just that, one of two.

What was good to see, is that he did evrything right. He went for the balls in that air when he had to, and left the rest to the defence when he didn’t need to come. His positioning was good for the latest save from short range, and a good PK save. Notice the strong arm for the PK save, something he was critisized agains Spurs. If he can do that every game, positioning and decisionmaking, he will soon become nr 1.

Song was totally shite btw. Where on earth does a DM burst forward SO many times. And when they do, they play it safe, not lose the ball EVERY time. He had a dreadful game. Denilson was more of a DM. Simple passes and worked more and tracked back more. Song needs to hit the bench.

i would have liked to have seen chesney feature prior to last night so we would at least have a taste of what the lad like. I really think he our best option from what i seen of the boy but he dont have the exp to play sunday though i think.

i well nervous about Flappy. 1 average game out of his time at arsenal is not good enough. shows how despreate we are to have given the muppet MOM when all he did was save a pen and nearly turned a shot that was straight at him in the goal (only just tipped round post). maybe it me for being to harse but i find it hard to except this prick in goal after all the blunders he has done in last 2 years

  34. JMART

    September 29, 2010 at 8:57 pm

    This is ridiculous.

I’m happy the team won, happy we didnt have any injuries or suspensions, and happy Fabianski didnt make any mistakes that cost us a goal. Those were my goals heading into the match. But Fabianski is still terrible.

One penalty save doesn’t make someone a great keeper just like that. Look at Almunia vs West Brom. Penalty saved in the first half, 3 goals conceded 2nd half, 2 of which were completely Almunia’s fault. Even after making a penalty save and a good save afterward, Fabianski is still a bad goalkeeper. If he can build on this game and get a string of good games like this, then maybe he’d deserve all the praise the Arsenal “supporters” on this blog are giving him. But he doesn’t. He is awful, just like Almunia.

People seem to think being a “supporter” means literally supporting every player on the club no matter how many mistakes they make. Thats ridiculous. Fabianski has done everything feasible to lose our trust (“our” being Arsenal supporters) by messing up nearly every chance he’s ever had at the club. Any one Arsenal fan who wants goalkeeping errors to happen just so they can prop themselves up and say “I told you so, we should’ve bought a keeper” doesn’t really support the club, he supports himself. But anyone who thinks Fabianski is a quality, trustworthy goalkeeper after yesterday’s match is certifiably an idiot. Or blind and deaf. In that case its a miracle that you can read this blog or write anything and well done to you.

Right now, Arsenal have 4 goalkeepers and none of them are in the top 10 of the Premier League. None of them can win a game for the club with great saves. All of them are capable of losing games with costly errors. So right now, the best we can hope for is to find the goalkeeper who will lose us the least amount of games due to error. Going off the last two years, I’d say that has to be either Sczeczny or Mannone.

  35. Fevzi of Surrey

    October 2, 2010 at 12:12 am

Now that was a surprising head-line wasn’t it?
Well done Flapajack – a few more performances like that and you might win a few people over… then again judging by the comments above I can’t see you getting a fair crack of the whip..??
