Cesc Might Stay After All + Don’t Buy Into The Transfer BS

Cesc Fabregas had more to say on the silly rumours linking him with Barcelona. According to the Arsenal skipper:

I haven’t said that I will definitely leave Arsenal. Everything is possible. Now I have my head and my focus on the World Cup. I am very proud to be captain of Arsenal and I love the club and have respect for them. It gave me such pride to be made captain.

Quite frankly I don’t see why we’re still on this. Yeah it’s clear Cesc is considering going to Barcelona but it just won’t happen. The last time he spoke on this issue he said he’ll leave it in Wenger’s hands and what that means is that Wenger will decide his future, not Cesc.

When Barcelona offered us a measly £25M for him we told them it’s not enough and we will not be making counteroffers with them nor entertaining further negotiations. In other words, we said ‘That’s that, we’re not selling him and that’s final’. You’d think that the board saying this to them would kill those rumours, but no, they still persist.

Is it that the media just want us to lose our players that badly that they’d help Barcelona continue their bullying and tapping up tactics? I certainly think so. What’s even worse is the group of mindless Arsenal fans who are willing to believe anything at all they hear or read or see on tv. They’re the ones who allow these rumours to continue as they’re the ones who keep falling for them and reacting to them as if they were true about him leaving. Why must Arsenal fans be like this though? Why are Arsenal fans so pessimistic? More importantly, why is it that whenever stories like these circulate and officials inside the club make comments to kill them, many fans prefer not to believe these quotes but take everything spewed out by media houses such as Sky Sports and BBC Sport as gospel? Don’t they see that it’s their mindless following that is allowing the media to perpetuate this kind of bullshit?

Moving on…

There’s word Lorient’s Laurent Koscielny has agreed personal terms with Arsenal and both clubs have agreed on a transfer fee but the deal’s yet to become official as all that’s left to be done is for Arsene Wenger to dot the Is and cross the Ts. Apparently it’s hard for him to do that though, when he’s in South Africa without his Blackberry. What it means, however, is that we can rest assured that we have a defender coming in.

Word on the street is that we upped our £6M bid on Everton’s Phil Jagielka by £4M and David Moyes has urged his board not to give in to our request. What I’ve heard is that this has caused us to turn our attention elsewhere – to Werder Bremen in fact, where Steve Rowley has been scouting Per Mertesacker. It is believed we’re looking to offer Bremen the £10M we were gonna offer Everton for Jagielka for his services.

We’re also being linked to Rangers’ Madjid Bougherra and Benfica’s Rafik Halliche. Both of these defenders are Algerian and if these rumours are true then it suggests that Wenger’s had a firm eye on the proceedings in Group C at the World Cup.

Something that really irks me is that people are stupidly looking at the fact that we’ve let Senderos, Silvestre, Gallas and possibly even Sol Campbell go and we haven’t made any defensive signings as yet, to suggest that we’re not going to be making any signings at all. What the f#ck?! Seriously? Are people that f#cking inane? If we really weren’t planning on signing replacements then it would mean we’d enter the new season with Vermaelen and Djourou as our only two senior defenders in the team. It doesn’t take rocket science to see that that certainly can’t work, especially for a team with title ambitions. Of course we’re going to be signing more players. How many times does Arsene Wenger need to say it for people to believe it? He doesn’t even have to say it. It’s actually a given that we will, really.

People need to chill the f#ck out and relax. This is the summer and a World Cup summer at that. There are many players who have their focus on the World Cup right now and those that already participated and got eliminated are off enjoying their well earned summer vacations. It’s hard to do business with players right at this moment.

Not only are players off relaxing but so too is Arsene Wenger. He’s in South Africa doing media work for French TV but as peculiar as it sounds, this is how Wenger is used to spending his time off from the club. The man is off enjoying himself, relaxing and recharging for next season and it’s quite fine if he’s not ready to make his signings yet because there’s a time and place for everything and right now he’s not at work for us.

Are people really dumb enough to think that they realise that the team needs strengthening but Arsene Wenger doesn’t? How dimwitted do you really have to be to actually believe that? Seriously!

I think while there are the sheep who are stupid enough to follow every maniacal ranting spewed against Arsene Wenger, there are those who look to chastise him for every single reason they can find. Whether it’s because we haven’t won a trophy since f#ck knows when or because they got soaked walking home in the pouring rain. I don’t get why Arsenal fans have to be so negative all the time and create panic around the club when there really needs to be none at all. I just urge all of you reading this not to be as mindless as those who give those jerks creating drama around the club a soap box to stand on and speak. Think for yourself and question authority.

Anyway, this is the end of my rant for now. Leave your thoughts below. Dust!

i like where u say – “What I’ve heard is that this has caused us to turn our attention elsewhere – to Werder Bremen in fact, where Steve Rowley has been scouting Per Mertesacker” – as if you’ve got a nice little inside source. Nothing to do with the fact that this ‘scoop’ has been on every website 3 days ago!

    Get a grip

  2. cerbera says:

Tell me exactly where I said I had an inside scoop. I even linked to the site I found the info from. You’re the one that needs a grip…and maybe some Prozac too.

  3. James says:

If Fabregas is such a silly rumour why you banging on about it for four paragraphs and doubtless have been all summer? Just because you don’t want it to happen doesn’t mean it won’t. Nobody knows what will happen so shutup and stop pretending you do know, because you don’t.

  4. goonergerry says:

Your analysis is far too simplistic- the Cesc situation hangs in the balance-we dont want to sell-and dont have to unless the player himself starts to push. Are we to pretend that all the statements made by Cesc about wanting to join Barca badly in the last month are not true-or that somehow he could join Barcelona without leaving Arsenal? After selling Toure,if Barca fail with other bids they may well up the bid for Cesc to a more realistic level-and pursuade him that he will not spend next season on the bench. If Cesc starts to push hard for a move-we will have no option but to sell.
As for central defenders- three players have left another is on the verge-and we have not signed a replacement as yet. I am sorry but I cant get enthusiastic about Koscielny yet-a player from the lower reaches of the French league -completely untried at the level Arsenal are playing at- and he also has not signed yet. All other supposed defensive signings are speculation only. I am also not wild about Schwarzer in goal-is this the top class keeper we have been lacking in recent years? Hardly-even he hasn’t signed.
Given the time it appears to take for Arsenal to buy any player exactly what is your optimism based on?
Maybe the Vermaelen transfer was a one off?

  5. cerbera says:

You’ve missed the point of the post. If Cesc starts to push we can have Barca charged for match fixing. Cesc himself said he’s leaving his future in Wenger’s hands. What more is there that needs to be said about it? He told us he’s not going to push for any moves, he’s letting Wenger deal with it. We’ve got the upper hand. Barca can in no way force us to sell a player we don’t want to.

I didn’t suggest that we our defensive issues have been sorted by Koscielny. You should go and read the post again. My post is about how people are stupidly worrying that we won’t sign another player. You’re reading into shit that isn’t there dude. I seriously suggest you read the blog post again. Maybe you were reading two posts at once and got confused or something.

i like the tone of your article. It’s a pleasant change to read someone being respectful towards Arsene Wenger.

  7. Laurence says:

Nice blog, you make good points and the Arsenal fan base does need to be a little less negative. As for not winning anything for 5 years, well so what? We have built a fantastic new stadium while maintaining a high standard of football, we are not in debt and the club is well run. We now have the foundations to become THE major club in Europe and this has been made possible by Arsene Wenger. Thank you Arsene for all you have done for our club.

If Cesc leaves it will be a shame (I don’t think he will this year) but no player is bigger than the club so if he goes, good luck to him we will simply replace, rebuild and become stronger.

  8. Enfield Gooner says:

Good post, to the point and we will all be singing Arsene’s praises next year!

    Well done!

Btw I felt terrible for Ghana last night….Is it me or do whoever I want to win on penalties keeps losing?

  9. GMR says:

Why do people make stuff up just to get involved in an argument which doesn’t exist?? Can anyone link me to a direct quote from Cesc where he says he badly wants to join Barca this summer?? The fact is the quote never happened, yes he said he would quite like to join Barca when he was asked the question a couple of months ago, but then he has never denied that & he has been saying the same thing since the day he joined us. Barca is his home town club & the one he ultimately wants play for at some point, he has never said he wants to go this summer or even next.

As for signing defenders, well we’ll all have to wait. Koscielny will probably arrive at some point this week, but I wouldn’t expect any further moves for the time being. Senderos, leaving doesn’t count because we didn’t use or rely on him last season anyway. I’m sure one of the young players will replace him & Silvestre. Koscielny is Gallas replacement, but until Campbell decides whether to stay or go I can’t see him being replaced. If he goes I reckon Wenger will make a last minute move at the end of August, not saying thats the right way to do it, but it seems to be the way Wenger works. Forgetting about Senderos, but assuming he replaced all the other defenders that left, that would leave a first team squad of 29 players, seen as you’re only allowed to name 25 from this season we still need to lose a few.

  10. cerbera says:

    Why, thank you very much.

  11. cerbera says:

Haha my predictions have been well off too. I saw Brazil winning it this year and oh well, there goes that. I felt really bad for Gyan. I’ve criticised most of the African nations for not showing enough passion but the way he bawled his eyes out after the match said that he really saw how much it meant that an African team got to the Semis and made history.

  12. BigL says:

Good post mate, there is not much I can add to the Cesc debate other than he is not for sale, we won’t be selling him, he is going nowhere.

There are so many so called Arsenal blogs doing Barcelona’s dirty work for them.
You have to feel for Cesc, the guy as said practically nothing and people are calling for his head.

The whole Koscielny, Blackberry thing… I don’t buy that one. Are the media trying to say that Wengers Blackberry is the only internet capable device in South Africa? Surely if he was serious about the player he would a) use a laptop to access his email, b) have someone send him his blackberry.

  13. cerbera says:

Thanks and I couldn’t agree more with you, BigL. I thought the same about how a Blackberry could possibly be stalling the deal. Wenger’s not out in the middle of a jungle and I’m sure he has access to the internet all around him. Also, Ivan Gazidis could step in and sign whatever needs to be signed on behalf of him. Everything will get sorted in due time though and there’s nothing to worry about.

  14. Iceman says:

Sounds to me like you are the naive one! Every season we wait to see the signings arrive, to bolster our squad and give us that final push – but alas, it never happens. In the last 8 seasons we have spent an average of £7.8m. Everton, City, United, Chelsea, Yids, Sunderland, Fulham, Liverpool, Villa have all spent more and increased their squad size! Most of the transfer gossip is indeed pure speculation, but real Arsenal fans who desperately want their team to win the league/a trophy cling on to the hope that we too will spend, override our injury crisis each season and come out victorious.

  15. aj says:

In the days before the internet and blogging, I used to believe that all Arsenal supporters are decent, intelligent people. Unfortunately, the internet has killed that fantasy stone dead. The media reports on the internet and the Arsenal blogs have shocked me to see the depths of stupidity that a significant number of our fans descend to and I now understand why the tabloid media prosper so well in this fertile ground. Fortunately, the club can function well by just ignoring all the negativity.

I saw someone recently slagging off Wenger, calling him a liar, because we hadn’t completed our signings before the World Cup started! The WC started just after the transfer window opened, with nearly 3 months left before it closes again!

I am a bit concerned about the Mertesacker reports. I remember Hansen & Lawrenson describing him as the worst defender at the Euro 2008 Championships and they were both at him again after the England game (where it was hard to find fault with Germany in that context). They described him as having the turning-circle of a supertanker; now when you consider defenders who are good in the air but are easily turned, the person who comes to mind is Phil Senderos, who we have just let go for nothing, so why pay £10 million to buy a replica?

  16. aj says:

……….and Everton, City, Yids, Sunderland, Fulham, Liverpool, Villa all; finished below us in the EPL. United wasted a shed-load of cash on Berbatov and are up to their necks in debt.

    Case not proven!

  17. BigL says:

@AJ. Well, Wenger does cause a lot of these problems himself. If you go on TV and say ‘we will complete all our transfers before the start of the world cup’ then your opening yourself up for criticism when you fail to deliver. Wenger does it all the time.

The Arsenal PR people should take him to one side and have a quiet chat about managing fans expectations.

  18. arsenal4ever says:

@ aj are u on drugs?? mertesacker was one of the best players today!!! really love him in an arsenal shirt!!!
