What Has Wenger Done To Justify His £115,000 A-Week Wages?

Arsene Wenger has just been given a new £6m-A-Year contract, and a 20% pay rise by Arsenal.

Wenger is now the second highest paid Premier League boss, behind Carlo Ancelotti.

Only Jose Mourinho who won the treble with Inter Milan last season, has a better deal Ancelotti and then Wenger. Jose is on a reported £8.5m annually.

But what has Wenger done “recently” to justify this massive pay rise?

Arsenal and Wenger have not won anything since 2005, a football manager should be judged on success on the football pitch, not by how much money he makes or saves the club.

Yes Wenger has done a very good job financially for the club, So it could be argued a rise is warranted quite easily. But is it a football managers job to do this? Wenger has a degree in Economics but he is not an accountant, and you dont need to have this skill to be a great fooball manager.

Wengers job is getting the best out of his players and getting the footballing tactics right on the pitch. Something he has NOT done since 2005.

Its the boards job to do all the off field stuff isn’t it?

Would you rather have a manager like Jose Mourinho who is nothing more then a football manager and wants nothing more then to be the best and loves winning titles.

Or do you feel that being a football manager isn’t all about winning? The manager has some responsibility to making sure the club are financially secure, it’s in the long term interest of the club. And the wenger way of balancing the books comes first.

If that is the case then our next manager should be Alan Suger or Theo Paphitis, and they can carry on Wengers policy of treating the club as a business and making sure that we make a profit each year.

Personally I feel that a football manager should be responsible for on the field matters, tactics and getting the best out of his players and its down to the board room to worry about the rest.

I really cant see why and how Arsenal have rewarded Wenger with a massive pay rise for underachieving and failure.

I guess it depends what your goals are? If you want to win things then Wenger has done a poor job since 2005.

If you want to make a massive profit then Wenger has done a great job and the £115,000 a week wages is well worth it. Well at the end of the day he helped make it didn’t he. Maybe that’s why he never spends?

Prior to 2005 Wenger was a football manager, Now he cares about one thing, PROFIT!  And that’s why he is being rewarded with his massive pay rise.

What do you think? debate this more on our forum (HERE)

I wanted to respond by all of my points have been made by the previous posters. I will add this point though. A manager is paid to get the best out of whatever resources he has at his disposal. If you feel that Wenger has not done this or that another coach could have done better, you must be smokiing something.

Well – the majority of responses to this have slightly restored my faith that the world isn’t going completely bonkers… Does anyone actually remember Arsenal of the mid-90s with Jensen, McGoldrick, Kiwomya???

I would love more trophies and I hate the fact that the stadium goes no further than 2005 in its list of past successes, but that can’t be all there is surely. We play great football, are financially stable at a time when those words are rarely heard in any walk of life, have a wonderful array of talent coming through, basically everything that has been repeated time and time again above.

I get some of the criticism of Wenger and his occasional blind spots over team selection but this is one of the greatest managers to have graced football. He has utterly transformed the club and god only knows how many offers he has had to go elsewhere (where I guarantee people would pay more than he gets now).

Yet we hear that the “AKB” crowd are just in love with the manager and can’t see fault etc… That’s not true, I just think a lot of people cannot believe their eyes and ears when they see a so-called article such as this that tries to pass itself off as a valid opinion.

So on your basis the only decent managers out there are Alex Ferguson and Jose Mourinho, everyone else is an idiot. Both of them in clubs that are effectively bankrupt. If you can’t enjoy supporting Arsenal at the moment, then football’s not the game for you, it really isn’t you obnoxious idiotic little squirt. Why not stick to championship manager on your nintendo if winning is that important to you.

25 years a season ticket and hopefully 25 more. This will historically be recognised as a golden period I can assure you. If we have a more mediocre period then at least fools like you will sod off.

Quite apart from simple issues like several examples that can be cited of football clubs being relegated after building a new stadium, I guess the real reason Wenger earns what he does because he has to put up with “fans” who have “opinions” like this chop.

One thing we should all remember is the new rules on spending in Europe. when all the big spending clubs ie Man city, Chelsea, Inter Man United, Barca and Madrid are all banned from Europe because they cant balance the books, Arsenal will have a field day.

Like many contracts that city bankers have his pay rise was probably a negotiated part of his last deal i.e. if the club achieved a certain level of profitability he would be guaranteed a certain % of pay rise in the next deal. It clearly had no index linking it too trophy winning!

Nothing you say on here shows you have any regard, let alone support for Arsenal football club.

You are a sad little boy.

  15. Arsene Wengker

    August 25, 2010 at 7:31 pm

    Great article Sinbad, totally agree.

He is an appaling manager, wins nothing, and gets a payrise…..hmmm that makes sense, lets reward failure.

Some of these comments do make me laugh. You can guarantee most of these guys are 16 years old, have supported Arsenal for 2 years, and have no idea about anything Arsenal, let alone where the Emirates is.

Wenger refuses to pay big wages……unless theyre for him.

Wenger wont use his transfer budget…..but will accept payrises.

Wenger lies to the fans every year, yet the AKBs love him.

Then these cunts say “go support City” – when the irony is that in 2014 they will be switching teams and following their senile idol Wanker, sorry Wenger.

both managers in the same price bracket have won countless trophies in recent years, thats why they get the money. As a manager that must be the basis for a pay rise. It’s very dangerous to set a precedence at a top club like Arsenal for the basis of a pay rise to be on saving money. Sports first and foremost is about winning and being rewarded as such.

Well, over the past 5 seasons, his net spending ranks 20th out of 20 of the current teams in the Prem.

Meanwhile, his side is currently rated by the bookies as the 6th favourite to win the Champions League this season.

You do the maths! What other manager could do that job?

  24. Johnny

re.mattT, Absolutely spot on mate. I have said the same thing elsewhere, in 20/30 years time we will look back at this era and call it a golden time. I`ve been going since 83 and I can assure all these spoilt little cunts that want Wenger out, that we wont always be lucky enough to watch such a great side. I would like to see The Arsenal win a trophy every year but I realize football aint like that and there is far more to following a club than just basking in the glory, you have to suffer the setbacks as well. There will be plenty more dissapointments in the future, but one thing I know for sure is that we will have the funds available and the infrastucture to continue to challenge for honours. But as you say, the one good thing to come from this so-called barren spell is that it outs all the daft little kids who only started supporting the club because of Arsene Wenger and the success he delivered. If only we could get rid of the lot of them, supporting our great club would be an even more enjoyable experience.

No wonder Real Madrid wanted him long before Morinho.

One HUGE problem with your argument.

Football isnt about spending the least and scraping CL football every year. Wengker has been a runner up his whole life.

His management is stuck in the 90’s – doing the same old things he was doing at Monaco & in the J League.

So you think Arsene`s management is stuck in the 90`s, Well your right in one way, he is afterall 20 years ahead of his time. What has he won since the turn of the century, lets see, a double, back to back FA cups, oh, and thats right, another title in 04 when the side went unbeaten the whole season. Add on to that the fact that he guided the club to their first ever ECL final and the style of football his team produces and your pathetic rantings make you look a right cunt, but that is exactly what you are isn`t it pal.

  33. Arsene Wengker

    August 25, 2010 at 9:55 pm

Never tried to say he wasnt once a good manager, but he isnt anymore. People get old, run out of ideas, lose their ability…..this is why we sell players….they are no longer good enough.

What has he done in the last 6 seasons???????

Well……he sold our best ever player, he sold Vieira, he lost Flamini so he could pay himself a bit extra, he lost the best LB in the world over £250k pa, and replaced them all with kids that were incapable of winning.

he admitted last year that you need CBs between 26-32 to win big trophies, and MFs between 24-32…..yet he puts out players outside of that range all the time.

He left our best player out of the CC semi in 09,,,,and we lost.

He has built a team that gets humiliated by our rivals, and dismantled by Barca, all the time saying he doesnt need to focus on stopping Messi.

He is no longer a good manager…..as much as it hurts you to admit this, its time to face facts.

Since wenger took over The Arsenal have become world famous for there great football and true interperatition of the beautiful game.. no only this but he has one of the best young squads in the world always good rins in the champions league and nurtures young potentials into world class players. if that wasn’t enough he also manage the clubs finances so we could build a 350million poun stadium. The baron spell in tropies coincides with paying back the stadium get sone really football knowledge together before you make these kind of crazy claims. 36. chris

    August 25, 2010 at 10:35 pm

Arsene’s done a lot to justify his pay rise –
Regular qualification for rte CL group stages is prbabl worth about 30m per year x 12 is £360m
So in other words he’s paid for the stadium.
You say financial achievements are not important but if so why are you worried about his pay rise then?
We won’t and in particluar you won’t ever know to what extent the financial constraints that appear to restrict transfer spending are his choice or him making thebest of things or for that matter what the team could have won if more money had been spent……
And by the way, it’s pathetic revisionist nonsense to go on about him (as opposed to Arsenal) not winning things, when pure football managers like Mourinho go about winning titles.
Mainly because you only refer to Mourinho because he’s won things –
But, anyway, there aren’t managers like Mourinho – there’s only Mourinho.
If you think he could have been persuaded to cometo Arsenal instead of Madrid or Inter, that’s a a way, way out view imo but even if so it’s really a criticiam of te board rather than Arsene

What a tosser you are… so you believe that if we get a manager who isn’t afraid to spend money we’ll win the premiership? You’re a fool. How much did Benitez spend Net at Liverpool. You buffoon you ask what he has done in the las six seasons… how about this…. Champions League Final. No other Arsenal manager has taken Arsenal to the finals of Europe’s premier competition. None! And then a semi final. You’re the kind of moron who thinks that winning the Europa cup is better than losing to Barcelona in the ECL quarter final.

You idiot… how many players did we have missing against Barcelona at the Nou Camp… No Fabregas, No Song, No Gallas, we couldn’t even play Sol Campbell, no Arshavin and above all no van Persie! ANd we took the lead for fucks sake and could easily have been 2-0 up. How many teams in Europe can step onto the pitch at the Nou Camp with half their first eleven missing and hope to survive? HOW MANY TEAMS WITH ANYTHING LIKE OUR BUDGET CAN EVEN COME CLOSE TO GIVING THE PERFORMANCE WE GAVE THAT NIGHT? Idiots like you know nothing about Arsenal… do you know we finished outside the top 10 under Graham? Do you that the season after we won the league title at Anfield that Spurs finished above us…. MoronS like you ought to go and support Chelsea because there’s no way that you deserve to have a manager like Wenger.

Only an idiot thinks that just because a midfielder is aged 26 that makes him good. Players who are mature and good enough to displace the talent we have cost a bomb. How many players in the world are better than Song or Diaby and how much do you imagine they’d cost? Fool.

Great Blog. Too many Arsenal fans bring up the fact that we don’t have a divine right to win trophys every year, which is true. But things are very different now from 20/30 years ago. We pay more than any other team IN THE WORLD to see the Arsenal and our money is not matched by ambition. We were told we were moving to the Em**ates to compete with the big boys but have won nothing since. We are being mugged off and all the board care about is getting the chamions league dosh. They’re not fans they don’t care about trophys and Wenger is making them money so they are all to happy to reward him. We need a new board and a new manager with ambitions to be the best club in the world, not the shrewdest. We have become a feeder club, things must change!! When will people realise we will not win anything else while the current board and Wenger are in charge.

If you want to talk about money then I would suggest taking a look at Arsenal’s books now compared to when Wenger joined the club. If you want Wenger out based on footballing reasons, that is one thing. You can’t criticise the money he earns because you know nothing about the money he brings to the club.

    August 26, 2010 at 1:04 am

The football manager’s job is to win matches and trophies. Playing attractive soccer and getting
beaten but making money for the club is not good enough. Please don’t take the fans for granted who pay outrageous sums to watch the gunners. Admittedly the gooner fans can stay away but the gunners are in their blood.
I honestly Wenger bellieve is in the final lap and if the gunners continue to under achieve/perform he should go and manage another team. He will find that his authority will be considerably reduced.Btw such teams don’t ‘t take kindly to managers playing pattern weaving/pretty/sexy soccer and getting beaten.

hey..this is my opinion..i think wenger were very very much worth to get this course he done very very good job for arsenal in past 5 year. The reason is:

    1. arsenal doest have sugar daddy like man city or chelsea
    2. arsenal doest have debt like man utd, liverfool, and barcelona
    3. arsenal have vision that all we can see ‘build team for the future and i can see we will win many thing in future..
    4. arsenal play attractive football that very hard to play in modern game(please make exception for
barcelona because they got messi and they also spending money like crazy like ibrahimovike)
    5. we were transfer to emirate and got financial control but still compete in Prem,CPL,and other cup
other team spending like crazy(like spur villa etc) but never can catch our tail in de end.
    6. other team likely have more luck on their side(like man u got suuper extra time in city match)
    8. if you want me to list it to many

we all love wenger even thought he doest win us a trophies..but still sad to see guy like adebayor flamini hleb leave that wenger need more time to build when this money seeker go.. im still imagine if they all still in club in past 4year..do arsenal will win title? Now we all have song chamakh samir.. please win us title this season..

I think Wenger is the best manager that Arsenal has ever had. Yes, we didn’t win anything since 2005, but he made us strong financially (Personally, i think it’s just a bad luck that we didn’t win). Look at the stadium we have. Look at Manu, Chelsea, or Liverpool stadium. You can see, ours is so much better than theirs.

A great manager can’t be judge by trophies they won only, but by how they manage the club to a better condition too. Fergie is a good football manager, so is Ancelloti, Benitez or Pep Guardiola, but look at the condition of the club they managed now. They’re poor, they don’t have enough money to run things. The only way they can think of to make money is by selling the club or by loaning to a bank.

I love how Wenger runs things. And i wouldn’t change him for anybody.

“But what has Wenger done “recently” to justify this massive pay rise?”

Only an retard, who knows nothing about Arsena, would ask such a question. Wenger has done amazingly well with a club with very limited funds. He’s thinking about the long-term development of the club and stayed during the years when the Emirates Arena prevented any big name signings. 10, 20, 30 years from now people will realize what a genius he was when everyone else was blinded by the chase for silverware. Many clubs will suffer for years because of their over-spending, we will prosper.

“Would you rather have a manager like Jose Mourinho”

The Special One would have left years ago when he would have realized that he couldn’t buy his way to success. Even an old former big-spending dinosaur like Alex Ferguson is starting to sound like Arsene Wenger.

Please, Mr “Wengker”, stop being such an idiot.

A club manager doesn’t just handle Players; Hate it or not, it’s actually his job to mind Arsenal’s economics. He has done a lot of work with soooo little. I don’t believe any of your ideal managers can balance the books & still compete…plus, i think he could do a far better job than say Pep Guardiola if he had who Pep has, better than good ol’ Mourinho if he had the same staff. Get a life Sinbad, i have noticed that you r always abt negative press. Wenger deserves to be on 200k bucks a week, not the loose change he’s being paid.

No idea you build a 460M stadium paying 5% fixed interest a year leaves very little money to work with 15M a year to be accurate that is the budget he has had & he has managed to keep us in the top 4 without spending it as a matter of fact he has made a profit in the last 5 years albeit thanks to the Sheik

Great debate. I think it would be harsh to say Arsene does not deserve this, but what is for sure the focus will be on him even more to deliver some silverware, which for the life of me I can’t see us getting any, as 1) we are not good enough to win the league – simples, 2)he keeps putting out weak teams for the cup comps and 3) we are also not good enough to win Champs League, so it will be 6 years without a trophy, but hey at least we are a profitable club aren’t we….

I love the fact that wenger has been able to keep us in the top four without spending money its great. But we as fan don’t just want 4th or 3rd or 2nd we need 1st we need the CL. If we win the FA cup and carling cup it will be fine for eveyone else but for me it isn’t enough. We have such a great team of men (not kids, there not kids nomore! we have two world cup finalist in our team!) His salary is fair for me, maybe he should get the same as fergie but thats what the board want and they obiviously have more fiancies if they can afford them wages, cause wenger isn’t crazied by money he never arguies about it. We have no excuses this season, i don’t see any. The cancer is gone (Gallas), and so have the old timers, sliverster and campbell, we brought in two good new defedners and one more on the way. You can say we let go of four but senderous never played nore did slivester. No more excuses, we are not kids we don’t have a defence problem except one more player in depth, and we can’t blame the keeper every game even though i and you will. If we don’t win this club needs to buck up its ideas or there will be more empty sits next season.

here is a better question. what hasnt he done to deserve his wages? isnt that fairer? i suppose at the same time the author of this rant could also ask his or herself whether or not they are wasting their breath with this anti-wenger stuff. i mean 287 members on the facebook ‘wenger out’ group isnt exactly great when it was put up over a year ago. considering the worldwide fan base, thats not exactly representative is it? has it occured to the author that his views and those of his mates are in a distinct minority? considering the way this guy goes on about how much he hates wenger and then tells everyone else they are deluded if they support him, i am not surprised by what is come up with by this sad excuse for an arsenal “supporters” blog. its just negative the whole time if you look down the entries of this blogers entries, and in the general the entire site. just type in arsenal blog in google and see how far up this one comes in the list. despite the empty rhetoric used and a failed attempt at protest outside the grove, the aims of this blog are failing. this blog is a waste of time to write surely? the best way to deal with a child is to ignore him.
