Congrats, Wenger. You successfully cut the wage bill, 4 defenders out, one highly paid (Gallas), 2 in as replacements.

uhhhh …. no he didn’t. Actually he said, “We are where we are – we have four great keepers and it is important we give confidence to them for the next game,” Wenger said.

“I do not rule it out, but at the moment I say I am not in a position to sign anybody. At the moment, it is all dead.”

I just cannot beleive that with all his knowledge he cannot see that we need a quality goalkeeper, one that is going to make us 12/15 points instead of costing us 12/15 over the season!! Otherwise we can expect another season of false promise

Today we had our champions league group sorted, yet all this blog does is go off some quote and run amok with it, taking it at complete face value and squeezin every single last drop of sesationalist negative gunk out of it.

Please, someone, show me where this blog has been anything other than anti-Arsenal, anti-Wenger and anti-anyone with a semblance of perspective who refuses to jump on this half baked retarded bandwagon…???

He will sign Swartzer. It’ll go down to the last day and Arsenal will pay a little more than they wanted to & Fulham will get a little less than they wanted. It’s called negotiation.

    August 26, 2010 at 8:04 pm

Arsene should bite the the bullet and buy Akinfeev, he’s young, a captain and a great goalkeeper! He is exactly what we need now, Szczesny looks like a great confident goalie but we need this quality now! Please Arsene spend the cash you have.

If Wenger doesnt sign a keeper he should resign now.Because without a quality keeper we are going to be trophyless again. What a shocking state of affairs. Its like wenger has completely forgot all the mistakes made by Almunia and Fabianski last season

    August 26, 2010 at 8:25 pm

Good signing by Wenger today. & no he didn’t say that he was talking about players leaving. Given or Marchetti in we can win the leage. Schwarzer in & were top 4 for sure

    August 26, 2010 at 8:35 pm

I don’t think he said he won’t sign no more players, i don’t think we will get a keeper but i think he wants one more defender, i mean he may stingy with the wallet but he ain a mug, he needs the same amount of defenders as last season and now he has four he needs one more hopefully young and big and strong. Cani?

From what i understood, reading between the lines (Wenger code) he’s trying to sign a keeper from Spain or Italy. Of course it might not happen, but i think the MS deal is dead for sure and the SG story was never gonna happen. Marchetti is a possibility, but only that. AW may surprise us yet, i do think he has tried to get a keeper, but it’s not easy when everyone on the planet knows we need one.

It is absolutely amazing that a man who earns approximately £150k per week to manage a football team is unable to see that his first two choices as club goalkeepers are completely inept.Almunia is a complete joke-he couldn’t catch a cold and wouldn’t be picked as first choice by any other manager in the Premier League.Flapianski is even worse and besides a similar inability to catch a cross he offers a similar handicap as far as distributing the ball to a team-mate is concerned.I’m not saying that Schwarzer would have been the ideal solution but he certainly would have been better than either of these two clowns.Perhaps our illustrious manager might promote “Chesny” from within as he is the only member of the first team squad capable of doing a job between the sticksUnfortunately this will only happen once we have witnessed more goalkeeping abhorrations from these two incompetents!

    August 26, 2010 at 8:49 pm

As for me, i don’t like the man and i will never do, why talking in CODE, so far he had spent only 14.5 millions on two players, big deal isn’t, damn you Wenger, guys he will still bring in two more players, he is working on them, he will do that before the hour of transfer window. And if he doesn’t that means Wenger is not good for us anymore.

  28. NYgooner

    August 26, 2010 at 9:29 pm

I think Tony is right. This was AW code for MS and SG being done (ie the English clubs won’t sell now the season has started) leaving only international options left. maybe that is Marchetti, maybe it is not.

    August 26, 2010 at 9:34 pm

We didn’t actually have Senderos playing for us so we really only lost Gallas, Sol and Silvestre. I am more than happy to replace them with Koscielny, Djourou and Squillaci.

Wenger has clearly been looking to sign a keeper and he actually said ‘we don’t rule it out’ about bringing in another. The window is still open and a keeper is still on Wenger’s shopping list. He even said before the Squillaci signing, we could get one plus another. Stop crying about it.

    August 26, 2010 at 10:10 pm

We need a top quality goalie otherwise I can see players shooting from the half way line knowing they could well score against the rubbish keepers that we have. It’ll be open house go on mate shoot!
Why on earth can’t the boss see what’s going to happen?

  33. mystic

    August 26, 2010 at 10:17 pm

I can’t be bothered to watch the video, Wenger has made it clear in the past that when clubs can publically see that Arsenal are in the market the price of players goes up. He is therefore hardly going to say anything to disrupt the situation. I hope he buys a goalkeeper, but I’m not going to conclude ANYTHING until the end of the transfer window.

Guesswork / assumptions by those writing blogs, but not involved in the day-to-day running of the club, is purely sensationalism.

If he once again fail to strenghten where it is needed it is third season on the trot his inability to strengthen at the right time has cost us. It really is beyond belief if cant see that we need a decent goal keeper.

    August 27, 2010 at 1:24 am

In arsene we trust we really need an experience keeper if we realy want to be in the race for trophy, all our defence don’t have confidence on almunia and fanbiansky, even if u dnt want to spend is better manone shuld be number 1 than almunia cos we need to be frank abt the situation

  36. JGun

    August 27, 2010 at 2:27 am

People are getting misguided by the full interview answer on BBC and the sky sports news “cut” (myself included). On SSN they cut after he said yes to the question of whether there would be more signings BUT Arsene corrected himself and said that he meant no players OUT and domestically we are finished. So expect no Schwarzer yay, or given or any other prem player.

  37. josh

    August 27, 2010 at 2:55 am

If Arsene Wenger had mentioned that Arsenal have four ‘great’ GKs, many fans would not be able to agree with him. Honestly, Almunia tend to be panicky at crucial moments and is a letdown here. Fabianski is definitely a no no. The reserve GKs are ok and need experience. So I believe Arsenal still need an experienced GK with steady hands.

  38. Davi

    August 27, 2010 at 5:36 am

Calm down. Do you really think it’s smart to come out and say “yes we are desperate for new keepers because the ones we have are awful”??? What if he can’t get anyone else? Then we’re stuck with keepers who know that wenger has absolutely no faith in them.
Anyway, I think these two CBs will improve our defense enourmously. For one thing they are actually proper defenders who will be thoroughly focussed on defending, unlike in previous years. Having defenders who can attack well is fantastic, but to have both your CBs charging up the pitch all the time when we were letting in so many goals is a bit stupid.

Wenger not expecting any more signings

  41. iowagooner

    August 27, 2010 at 1:59 pm

Of course Wenger is going to say we aren’t going to sign anyone. Almunia will be starting in goal this weekend against Blackburn, of all teams, and what do you think would happen if he told the press “we’re still in the market for a goalkeeper” a day before the game? Almunia’s confidence, which is nearly nonexistent to begin with, would be completely gone. We have to nurture him, which is one of the many reasons he is shite.

Don’t slate Wenger and ask “How can he not see we need a goalkeeper.” Obviously he does. He bid for Shwarzer. Twice.

IMO, the video confirmed his frustration with Fulham holding out for a bit more money. Wenger is notorious for getting the deal done at the last minute. Wenger wants the transfer deadline pushed up so he can get his deadline deals done before the season starts, not after Blackburn away.

People need to calm down. I was annoyed by the headlines but after seeing the FULL interview i think its clear he is still trying to sign a keeper. i think marchetti or landreau most likely.
when wenger says we aren’t close he means we are still at the bidding stage. not that we aren’t trying. once a bids accepted it’ll get done. of course he’s got to be careful what he says with almunia in goal going to blackburn.
people also need to calm down about almunia. people wont be shooting from the half way line. he is a good shot-stopper. he is just prone to concentration mistakes that can prove to be very costly at this level. while i dont think we can win a big trophy with him i know he’s not horrendous by any means. he’s a decent keeper. just doesn’t have the confidence, the presence or physical power in the air that a world class keeper possesses and the qualities you need in a keeper if you want to win stuff like the premier league or champions league
