Thomas Vermaelen is a player that elicits a kind of conundrum of whether we should we sell or keep him? With this situation there lies a problem Vermaelen isn’t just another useless player that we don’t need, he has been brilliant in the past for us even though he did struggle and with the great partnership of Kocielny and Mertesacker Vermaelen has been relegated to a substitute.
But the times he has played he’s played well, but is it selfish to want to keep him knowing he doesn’t get playing time?
The only real viable way I see to keep him is to use him as Sagna’s replacement.
But would that work? Me personally would like to see him stay at Arsenal I think he’s a very good player and he can still fight for his position.
But of course I’m just a half Egyptian wannabe journalist so I don’t really get the say as to who stays and who goes. The Vermaelen situation isn’t as clear cut as it it with other players, so what options does he have?
1/leave Arsenal join Tottenham and enjoy playing time but never play in the Champions League.
2/Make the bench his own and just enjoy getting paid for sitting down.
3/start a plot to get rid of Kocielny or Mertesacker.
4/find Wenger’s dirty secret and blackmail him.
But in all seriousness it is a hard decision on whether to sell him, it has nothing to do with his skill or that the fans dislike him and wish him to fade into obscurity elsewhere, it’s simply to do with the fact he won’t play as much.
The question is it fair to keep someone of Vermaelens talent on the bench?
I myself don’t see him leaving this summer, I think another year to regroup himself and fight for his spot is deserved.
I always thought that there was milage in the premise that he would fit into a dm role. This hasn’t happened and presumeably never will.Meanwhile his form like so many of Arsenal’s senior players has been somewhat sporadic over the course of the last two seasons. If Belgium have a reasonable World Cup and he plays his part then I am pretty sure that he will be looking for a move. That being the case Arsenal will push for an inflated transfer fee yet bulk at paying a similar price for his replacement. Some might call this “savvy transfer policy”…whilst I would call it the same type of pig-headedness which Season after Season prevents any discernible improvement in the strength and depth of this Arsenal Squad…”Be careful what you wish for”…Three more years of mediocrity…jumbled and repetitively inept team tactics by the proverbial flat track bullies of the Premier League….Whilst always capable of beating the likes of Hull City (even in an FA Cup Final) this side without necessary “marque signings” will inevitably struggle to beat any of it’s main rivals. It doesn’t bear thinking about the result against a Chelsea side with the additions of Costa and Fabregas…Although Arsenal will be able to pick from the “like new signings” (Walcott and Diaby) as well as the newly purchased Remy (release clause of under £10m) and whichever ” good value” midfielder (in the vein of Kellstrom) that Wenger has chosen to replace Arteta (dream on if you think he’s going to spend another £20-£30m on the likes of Bender)..this side is incapable of competing with the best of it’s rivals.
This article is basically pointless. In the first place, Vermualen’s situation is not a case of victimization or favoritism. Koscielny and BFG have simply been better than him. Even he cannot argue against it. It is therefore natural that they would be picked ahead of him. Given the way injuries happen at Arsenal and to any team, it is important to have two back up for the two centre halves positions in the team. If anything, we need another person since Sagna is on the way out. It is our job to persuade Vermualen to stay rather that talk of the morals of selling him. He should be courageous to stand up and fight to break up the patnership of BFG ans KOS.
