Arsenal wasting their time with Oblak pursuit

Arsenal continue to be linked with Atletico Madrid goalkeeper Jan Oblak and the rumours have intensified after he admitted uncertain over his future.

The 25-year-old recently told Ekipa: “It’s tough to discuss the future. It’s not easy to talk about what’s going to happen tomorrow never mind what will happen next season, but I am calm and the situation depends on Atletico – nobody knows the future.

“There’s nothing new, there have been a lot of things said and written about a new contract but the only confirmed situation is that there is nothing new. I have a contract that I signed two years ago, but now I must wait to see what Atleti’s plan is.”

Arsenal are shopping for a long-term replacement for Petr Cech, with the former Chelsea shot-stopper out of contract in less than 18 months and unlikely to get an extension given his inconsistent form ever since signing in 2015.

Head of Recruitment Sven Mislintat has seemingly identified two Bundesliga goalkeepers in Bernd Leno (Bayer Leverkusen) and Peter Gulacsi (RB Leipzig) who could replace Cech, so it’s hard to see Arsenal going hard for Oblak.

Let alone Arsenal having their eye on other targets, Oblak is being hunted by bigger clubs which could mean the Gunners waste their time trying to agree a deal. The Express say Real Madrid, Manchester United and Paris Saint-Germain are keen on the Slovenian international.

There’s no question about Oblak’s quality, with the Atleti ‘keeper boasting 18 clean sheets in 29 La Liga games this season, but Arsenal might struggle to convince him to leave the Spanish giants. It would be a step down.

Leno and Gulacsi, however, would surely jump at the chance to join the Gunners, so it’s worth spending more time trying to land one of their signatures this summer.
