Mesut Ozil will not be certain of regular first-team action

Arsenal’s first two games have yielded less than ideal results as they lost both. Yes, it is not a great way to start the League but at the same time, it is not a disaster. Unai Emery was just unlucky that the Gunners were drawn to play against Manchester City and Chelsea in his first two games at the helm of the fallen Premier League giants.

The new signings will naturally take time to adjust to their new surroundings. It will take time for the new systems put in place by Emery will start to yield results. There have been positives to take from the first two games, during which the Gunners were competitive. Though they lost the two games, they did not lack mental strength as they did during Arsene Wenger’s final two seasons at the helm of the club.

What has however been disappointing has been the performances of Granit Xhaka and Mesut Ozil. Both are senior players within the side and so better should have been expected from them. As it stands, both lack a strong work ethic and Ozil in particular has attracted strong criticism due to his work-ethic during recent years.

Ozil’s attitude has also been another concern. A captain can act as a role-model and if the attitude of the captain in particular is negative, it can affect team-chemistry. During the game against Chelsea, Ozil was clearly poor and Emery was right to take him off the pitch when the game was square at 2-2.

How did he react to being subbed? Instead of taking it professionally as a captain should do, he acted like a school-boy.

Henrikh Mkhitaryan on the other hand has been good in terms of his work-ethic and this is something that all the players in the squad should aim to replicate.
