Almunia is not good enough to be NUMBER ONE

by Roger Milla on Mon Mar 23, 2009 9:18 am

I have said this for a long time to my friends, As long as Almunia is number one at Arsenal we will not win anything. He is just not good enough to be our number one keeper. You look at the top clubs around the world and they all have a world class keeper. Who is Almunia?

He makes 2 many mistakes that have cost us points and games.

I think Almunia is a dencet keeper and is a good number 2 but he is not a man who i trust in goal. I am also not convinced with Fabainski at all.

I would like wenger to go out and sign a solid keeper in the summer.

I like Robert Green and think he can become the best keeper in the league at Arsenal

Alumnia doesn't get the credit he deserves. Since taking over the number 1 spot, he's done a fantastic job, and played well in some crucial games. He's had the odd error, but who hasn't? Every keeper makes mistakes, no one's perfect mate.

So no, I don't want Wenger to go out and sign another keeper, we already have a great one!

He could go out and spend the money on a DM, or a new CB because it's pretty obvious Toure is going leave in the summer.

well said gb.

almunia gets a lot of stick for nothing.

can anyone name some high profile mistakes hes made?

almunia may not be better than van der sar....but hes stunningly consistant...and thats a good thing to be if you're a goalkeeper

I agree. Alumina doesn't get the credit he deserves. He has done a good job since becoming number one. I was a bit sceptical of him at first but he has played very well this season and he is growing on me a lot. Seaman was an awesome keeper and even he made mistakes.

Almunia defiantly improved but I still don't see him as a goalkeeper for the longer-time. I just see him as a temporiarly goalie untill Fabenski is ready

Agreed.

I always feel that Almunia is about to drop a clanger. Cant say i trust him... Also agree about Robert Green being a good signing for Arsenal

Almunia is good enough for the moment. he's very consistent and hasn't made stupid mistakes like jens.

He doesn't have that aura of greatness about him but he is the best we have got right now. I don't know if Fabianski will become great or if we will have to go shopping. We have had much better goalies in the past (Jennings, Seaman, Wilson, Lehman) but they all drop the odd clanger every now and then. If I was shopping I would want a DM first, then maybe a CB and after that a goalie.

Sorry but I disagree with the original post. I think earlier this season in between September and November when our form was much much worse Almunia kept our games closer and many of those matches we scraped draws out of were because of him. If not for him we would've conceded a lot more times this season. In terms of reflexes and penalty stopping you'd be hard pressed to find many better keepers than him today and what I've noticed about him is that he actually develops each season. Last season my main problem with him was that he didn't know how to organise his wall properly when defending free kicks but he seems to have solved that problem. I think most people's problem with him is that he doesn't have a reputation like Casillas or Buffon. He's done nothing wrong in my eyes and he seems to be very liked by his teammates as well and he's one of the leaders of the team. I don't think he should be replaced at all.

I think he has done great thise season, and that's despite the fact I thought we should have signed a goalkeeper in the summer as a new number 1. He has barely made a mistake, especially in the last few months and also made some very important saves for us.

The reason why some fans are still on his back is simply because he came as a reserve keeper and took a while to displace Lehmann while not looking particularly good, and he isn't a big name or even an international and this affects people's judgement imo. I bet you if we had signed someone like Cech and he played exactly how Almunia has done he would have been praised all season.
