Reports surfacing on the continent claim that St Etienne midfielder Blaise Matuidi is a serious summer transfer target for Arsenal with Arsene Wenger apparently contacting the Ligue 1 side’s director of football Damien Comolli. Comolli, who was formerly Arsenal’s chief European scout and the director of football at north London rivals Tottenham Hotspur, is known to be a close associate of Wenger’s and appears to be willing to do business should the Gunners table a serious offer for Matuidi.
For his part, Matuidi has made it public that he is very pleased by the links in the French press but insisted that any decision would depend on his current club.
"I am interested in playing abroad. I would like to test myself in one of the two best leagues in the world," the 22-year-old told skysports.com.
"However, my club would have to be fine with everything. I owe them a lot.
"Playing for Arsenal would be fantastic but I can't say anything about that yet. Everyone knows their wonderful style of football."
