Chris Smalling

With Djourou already waiting in the wings and Senderos still potentially at the club next year, it would be understandable that Wenger would be looking at very youthful targets.

That target could be Fullham's Chris Smalling. If rumours are correct then Arsenal are about to table a £7 million bid for the England under 21 player.

That kind of money would certainly give Hodgson pause for thought. Despite the Fullham managers belief in Smalling's potential for the future, £7 million would give him the opportunity to make a buy that could turn around his clubs current fortunes.

At over 6'4" the 20 year old Smalling could provide the kind of physical presence that Sol Campbell once did.

Good Player and has the height that we need but the problem is if he can fit in the Arsenal system or type of play but Wenger should pick him up

Vermaelen is only 24 so he has at least 6 or 7 years in him if he stays at Arsenal . We have Gallas for another year or two maybe and Djourou who is 23 and has also 6 or 7 more years if he stays at Arsenal . I doubt he will ever get the opportunity for at least two or three seasons to come but afterall Djourou gets injured a lot compared to the likes of Gallas and Vermaelen so maybe a defender could walk into the starting line up if he is good enough

Sorry for double post but heres the skysports link

Sky Sports News understands that Arsenal have made a move for Fulham's promising defender Chris Smalling.

The Gunners see the 20-year-old defender as an excellent prospect for the future and could pay as much as £7million to secure his services.

Smalling, who made his full Premier League debut against Chelsea earlier this season, has been a regular in Fulham's Europa League campaign.

Although Arsene Wenger added cover at the back recently after re-signing Sol Campbell, Smalling is seen as a long-term replacement for William Gallas.

Smalling has 18 months remaining on his deal and it remains to be seen whether Roy Hodgson is open to losing one of his brightest prospects.

The West London club has denied there has been any official approach for the player: "We have had no contact from any club whatsoever over Chris Smalling."

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has refused to rule out a move for Fulham youngster Chris Smalling in the future.

The England Under-21 international, who was playing non-league football for Maidstone just 18 months ago, is now regarded as one of the best young defensive prospects in the country.

He has started just one league match for Roy Hodgson's side but is already being linked with a move to Emirates Stadium after coming onto Wenger's radar.

And the Frenchman has refused to rule out a future move for Smalling, admitted his admiration for the youngster.

"He is a player we know, yes, but there is no truth in it at the moment," Wenger said.

"Maybe in the future. At the moment is at the moment. I never rule anything out.

"I never speak about transfers
