Eduardo

LIVERPOOL are ready to poach Eduardo from rivals Arsenal in a £10million deal.

The 26-year-old Croatian forward is unhappy that he has still to be offered improved terms at the Emirates.

His contract has just over 18 months to run and that has alerted Rafa Benitez, who desperately needs to strengthen his attacking options.

The recurring absence of first-choice Fernando Torres has convinced Benitez that he needs more firepower and he hopes to convince the Liverpool board to finance the deal with the club in a fraught battle for fourth place.

Liverpool cannot contemplate missing out on next season's Champions League and Benitez hopes that will release the purse strings.

Eduardo has started just three Premier League games this season despite fully recovering from the horror injury he picked up against Birmingham at the start of 2008.

The Brazilian-born forward was out for a year following the challenge from City's Martin Taylor that broke his ankle and his fibula.

But he has been back since February and wants a more prominent role at Arsenal that Arsene Wenger cannot currently give him.

Eduardo will seek talks with Wenger to see if he features in his long-term plans and if the Arsenal boss is not convincing, Liverpool are ready to pounce.

Olympique Lyon are reported to be tracking Arsenal striker and Brazilian-born Croatian international Eduardo and are preparing to make a bid for the 27 year old once they have ascertained if Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger is prepared to listen to offers. Eduardo has never quite broken through at Arsenal with Wenger seemingly preferring Nicklas Bendtner and with Robin Van Persie close to returning opportunities at The Emirates could be few for Eduardo.

Wenger however is looking to strengthen his squad and has made no indication that he is looking to sell players, some like Mikael Silvestre will be offloaded that is almost certain and he will not be the only one but Wenger is more interested in bringing players to The Emirates and not looking to sell too many from his young Arsenal squad.

That said Eduardo is not exactly a youngster and since his broken leg has never quite been the same player and depending on the offer from Lyon Wenger may well be happy to sell, Wenger has never been one to keep players for the sake of it and with younger stars like Walcott in the squad it will hardly be a great loss if Eduardo is not seen in an Arsenal shirt next season.

It would also not break the supporters hearts judging by some of the comments we received in our article 5 players Wenger should offload, Eduardo was named quite often by supporters and if that is any indication then Eduardo being sold will if anything please the Arsenal faithful.

Question is, if Eduardo is sold will he be the only one? Is Wenger ready to completely overhaul his squad and concentrate on building another generation of players having seen this current lot fall short?

Arsene Wenger has confirmed that he will sit down with Arsenal striker Eduardo at the end of the season to discuss his future. The Croatian international has struggled to find the form which he reached prior to his horrific leg break in February 2008 but signed a new contract with the Gunners at the end of last year.

Eduardo has scored six goals in 31 appearances this season for Arsenal but been predominantly confined to the substitutes bench despite injuries to teammates Nicklas Bendtner and Robin van Persie.

Appearing to lack confidence in front of goal, Arsenal coach Wenger told press that he saw signs of improvement towards the end of the season but admitted that the player is keen to play more first team football.

"In the last two months he looked sharp to me. It was the first full season after the surgery at the end of last season.

"He was a bit disturbed. I think next season should be better for him.

Responding to media suggestions that Eduardo could be sold this summer, Wenger confirmed that he would sit down and talk to the Brazilian born attacker but would certainly not loan him to another club.

"He is very important, but I will assess that situation before the end of the season to see how he feels.

"He is 25/26-years-old and wants to play. We extended his contract because we believe in him."
