ARSENAL are preparing a summer move for Brazil international Felipe Melo.

Boss Arsene Wenger wants the 25-year-old Fiorentina ace to strengthen a midfield that has struggled since allowing fans’ favourite Gilberto Silva, Mathieu Flamini and Lassana Diarra to leave the club.

And Arsenal also expect to lose at least one of Robin van Persie, Emmanuel Adebayor and Cesc Fabregas to a Spanish club this summer.
Buy-out

Melo has been outstanding for Fiorentina in his first season in Serie A.

The Gunners face competition from Chelsea and Aston Villa for Melo, who has a buy-out clause of over £17million at Fiorentina.

If we sold Adebayor we'd easily be able to buy him. We should get him, or someone like him

Felipe Melo ended speculation about his future by signing a one-year contract extension at Fiorentina.

The 25-year-old Brazil international had been strongly linked with Arsenal, but is now tied to the Tuscan club until June 2013.

"Fiorentina announces that its sporting director Pantaleo Corvino met in Milan with Felipe Melo's agent and an agreement was reached to extend the player's contract until 2013 with a buy-out clause also included," read a statement from the club.

Melo joined the Viola last summer from Spanish side Almeria in a transfer deal worth €8m. He made 29 league starts for Fiorentina last season and his performances attracted the attention several big clubs, including Arsenal and Inter Milan.

Probably old news by now, but he's supposed to have fallen out of favour with his Juve boss and might fancy a move over here.

Now what could possibly be better than a loan move early January as cover for Song? Wenger could then string him and Juve along until the end of the season before discarding him like an old wank sock. Job done. It's not as if he can only play DMF either and would be decent cover for Cesc, forming part of a strong MF should Cesc get injured. He likes getting forward too.

We can dream, eh?

Have you seen him play? He's a worse passer than Denilson last year. He's exactly what Arsenal don't need.
