Wenger - I won't name player we tried to sign

Arsène Wenger will not reveal the name of the player he tried to sign just before the transfer window closed.

In an exclusive TV Online interview, the Arsenal manager confirmed he was working hard throughout Monday to bring in a new player before the deadline expired.

At Friday’s press conference, he was quizzed further on the topic but remained steadfast.

“We did [try to sign someone], yes,” he said. “I do not like to lie and I do not like to put any player in a difficult position at the club where he is at the moment, so I’ll say nothing about it."

When asked if it was a striker he replied: “I leave you the freedom to guess.”

The news came as a surprise given that, in the build up to the window closing, he had suggested he would not be making any acquisition. On Friday he outlined the practical issues of bringing in someone new.

“In England, it seems all the problems are sorted out by buying players,” he said. “But I do not believe that.

“If you look really well at the European market during January this year, very little happened. There was no big transfer.

“That means it is impossible to find players who are available, walk in off the street and can play at the top level.

“I said we have too many players when they are all back but that has never been the case this year.

“Everyone advises you to buy but, at the end of the month, you have to pay the wages and across Europe at the moment you can buy 50 clubs if you have enough money because they have financial problems.

“We manage as well the Club within our financial resources and when you listen to people you always have to buy five or six players. But at the end of the day you have to pay them.”

Sinbad, how can this be labelled 'spin' when the window is firmly shut and has been for nearly a week?

It would be the most useless use of 'spin' ever, wouldn't it?

'Spin' is best effective when one is making a promise, or when telling people a situation is better than it really is. Neither applys here, and Wenger is merely disclosing what he tried to do during the window.

This thread has quite literally expired. It should be either merged or locked IMO. I favour the former.

No mate, I mean that he is trying to tell the fans that he did everything he could to sign a player just to keep people off his case as he knows that some fans wanted signings. Like i said mate, its spin

Do you REALLY think it's why he said that? And even if he DID say that for the reason you stated, it still isn't 'spin'. Call it good old bullsheight if you want, but 'spin' in the true sense of the word, it aint.

Who really cares about what he says he did or did not try to achieve, anyway?

He was no doubt asked the completely pointless question by some brain-dead cock-muncher of "Did you try?", and so gave 'an' answer.... If you're claiming this as some sort of itsy bitsy 'told you so' victory, then congratulations!

The worlds smallest 'Nostradamus' award is winging its way to you as I type this....

It's now February the 5th ffs...
